(Anonymous) 2017-01-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)I feel you, anon. That's why I find it hard to watch live-action tv shows, such as House or Sherlock, because a lot of them have these sort of character interactions. I know that these shows are supposedly about 'real people,' and real people can be assholes, but still it kinda sucks as an audience sometimes.
"Is it possible to have characters that aren't sniveling jerks constantly?" is something that I'd like to ask a screenwriter of one of those shows.
"But these characters are jerk because it's realistic and true to life. That's why everyone goes behind everyone's back all the time and everything is a superiority competition."
What happened to the notion of TV as escapism? Can't a person have a show where people are kind and treat each other with respect? :/
I hope the show you are watching picks itself up in quality, and starts being enjoyable again to you, anon. It's okay to be annoyed by jerk behaviours in media. I'm pretty sure they're aiming for a "oh gosh, this/these character(s) are so cloak-and-dagger! Don't you love to hate them?" on purpose, so being angry/frustrated is probably the intended reaction the writer wanted. Now whether the writer will reward your patience with a satisfying conclusion to the stuff the mean characters do is a different story, lol.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)I get how you feel, but I don't think this is the right angle to approach this. There is a point to be made about TV as escapism, but not all TV has to be, or should be, escapism because you want it to be so. That's like asking what happened to horror and why every movie can't be horror.
Some people enjoy the love to hate them, and if that's the audience the writers are writing for, good for them and that audience.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)It's okay, I wasn't proposing that all shows that exist are banned from having characters who backstab each other every once in a while. Variety is good! I was just feeling out that a lot of live-action shows right now have a lot of real-life-jerk characterizations. That's fine for most peeps, but I guess I'm not really a fan of it. Maybe they'll make more shows that would be good for me, but right now it leans heavily noncomedic-assholery.
(It seems to at least for me. If anybody has any recs for comedic/action tv shows where characters can be lightheartedly assholes to each other and still be a great relaxing watch, I'm game. I recommend the early seasons of Scrubs, Life on Mars (uk), Ashes to Ashes, The Listener, early seasons of Fringe, and more)
But that's just my experience with that sort of thing happening in TV. I'm hoping the show that OP is watching (Gray's Anatomy? My cousin who binge watched it says it's a pretty good show) continues to be enjoyable for them despite some characters pulling off some jerk maneuvers.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-18 02:15 am (UTC)(link)Agent Carter and Supergirl should probably go into the mix!
And yeah, Grey's Anatomy. It's not bad but GDI do I just want to reach into the screen and smack some of the characters sometimes (usually Derek Shepherd because holy fuck does he not know how to shit or get off the pot).
