I barely read any fanfic even for fandoms I enjoy because I just don't have the strength to sort through all the crap for the occasional gem, so I feel your pain, OP.

Aka every anime fandom I've been in ever.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto to this. I've stopped bothering with any anime related fandom, no one can write for shit. (okay not NO ONE but like 99% of them barely even remember what the characters were like, and most of them fail at even the basic conventions of writing)

I feel this

I know what you mean. I've never had a fandom be that bad, but some come close. Like I was searching for XMFC fanfic and every fourth fic was a non-powers AU, usually OOC. What's the point? I don't care if people like to write or read them. I just want a way to filter them out!

Haaahaha, yeah, I've been there. Am there.

That's the secret, OP. Juggernaut pairings in huge fandoms are actually the WORST. What you want is a small-to-midsize pairing in a huge fandom.

I loved once ff.net added the option to put characters. Loving some of the side characters in Harry Potter led me to find some interesting gems.

Yeah, and good fic does exist, but you need to go through a swamp of everything you mentioned - and I feel it gets worse the further away you are (time wise) from the release of the source material, because the obvious prompts have been done, and people still want to be unique, so you get all this AU stuff.

I feel like fandom these days in general is overrun by the AUs and coffeeshops and whatnot. It's one of the reasons I haven't been in fandom so much lately...

Things are weird, these days :/

The problem with the juggernaut pairing, is that it attracts the most writers - the good, the bad, and everything in between. So it gets the most fic, but that means it gets the most badfic, too. And Jesus Fucking Christ On A Pogo Stick, why does fandom love its coffee shop/high school/whatever AUs so much?

I don't see the appeal of coffe shop/ high school AU too. Whenever I want to read a fanfiction (what nowadays happens very seldom) I first have to sort out what is not set in any of these AUs and I often wonder why these AUs are so popular.

Once the fandom establishes itself for awhile (a few months in some cases), there will be rec lists. Live on those and never, ever free-roam. Find a few authors you like and start stalking their friend spaces. I've shipped big pairings all my fandom life, trust me on this.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure and only ever read books recommended by Oprah or whichever celebrity has book of the month clubs these days. Never ever read something that sounds interesting to you, follow the herd, even if the herd mostly rec things you don't even find that interesting.

Man, I've had good luck with plenty of my fandoms, but with one of them... yeah, I can feel you, OP. I was excited for a fandom set in a historical period I geek out for to get big, hoping for some fic with lovingly-researched details... ALL college or high-school AUs without even characterization staying constant.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Aww man, that's disappointing. :( I love fandoms with historical settings, but finding fic where the author has done a decent amount of research seems damn near impossible. But I can't exactly blame them because while I'd love to write that lovingly researched fic myself, the prospect of all that historical detail and accuracy is very intimidating.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly this is pretty much just the state of fandom nowadays. :/

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I know. :( As someone who almost always ships rarepairs/crackships, on the rare occasion I ship something popular, I can only seem to find OOC AU garbage fic.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I legitimately do not understand the huge appeal behind coffeeshop and high school AUs. When you have canons with expansive, fascinating settings, what on earth is the appeal of taking all of that away in favor of plunking the characters down into the equivalent of real life? If I want real life, I'll go outside, thanks.

I don't really get the obsession of coffee shop AUs in particular, but I do find if it's really well-written, I can generally enjoy it on the charm of the fact that I love the ship's dynamic so much. Same with HS aus.

It's definitely not something I'd write myself though.

For me the thorn in my side is ABO, as no matter what, I can't read those. And even if I click the 'canon-compliant' tag on A03, I still get it because some authors seem to think that their ABO fic is canon compliant.

Not all AUs are bad. I don't really get the AU hate going on in this thread.

If the characters are OOC, then yes, that's not something that anyone wants to read, but it is possible to keep the characters' core personalities and change their setting. It's a fun writing exercise, and allows writers to expand their skill sets while staying in a safe space, so to speak.

Yup! An awful lot of fanfic sucks at being fanfic. Comes of writers publishing some careless piece of prose they panted out with one hand in the cooch (or wrapped around the penis).
