OMG. A Robert Cormier secret. I love Robert Cormier. And I love his twisted, not super happy portrayal of the world!

Aren't most of his books about horrible people that you shouldn't be learning life lessons from?

His books always included something or other that disturbed the fuck out of me. I wonder if I read them too young?

Like the book about the hijacking of a schoolbus; I think I read it when I was around 9 or 10. That premise wasn't what made me upset, it was the scene where the young female bus driver pees her pants and as she strips out of her wet jeans in the back of the bus, trying to find privacy, she sees one of the hijackers watching her. I don't know if I internalized her shame or what but that scene made me feel so horrible and gross I either quit reading there or just can no longer remember anything else about that book.

After the First Death. I remember that one, but it's just as well you don't. The ending was depressing even by Cormier standards.

I shudder to think what that could mean!

Right?! If there's anything more depressing than the ending of I Am the Cheese, I don't want to know!

I only read the Chocolate Wars by him when I was in secondary school. I just remember feeling...uncomfortable/not really enjoying the book? Also, I remember the scene of the main character walking into the bathroom and finding his classmate pleasuring himself there. I was also in an all girl's school, so it was weird. I don't remember if the MC had a difficult/stressful time in school, but that is the vague feeling i am getting from that book.
