Re: Fat people of FS, how did you get fat?

I have PCOS. I successfully lost 30 pounds and got myself to a healthy weight a few years ago, then maintained it for two years. And then I went on a bunch of medication for various things including depression, one of the meds gave me tachycardia and high blood pressure spikes and I'd get winded going down a flight of stairs (when just weeks prior I could run up 6 flights of stairs with no problem), and I gained 40 pounds in less than 2 months. That was about 3 years ago, and I've never lost it. In fact, I've gained an extra 10 pounds since then. I'm heavier now than I've ever been, I'm completely out of shape, I get winded walking from my car to my office, and I'm pretty freaking miserable.

I went to a dietician , and got my BMR tested with a fancy machine, and it is literally almost half what it should be (~1650 calories vs. ~800 calories). She suggested I eat a medically-supervised very low calorie diet (like what people with lap-band surgery eat) and exercising more, and I was like to hell with that, and I never went back. Stupid, stupid, I know and my joints are suffering with all this extra weight, but I can't bear the thought of having to restrict my food that much. When I lost 30 lbs my whole world revolved around what I was eating that day and to think of going back to that kind of planning and discipline and restriction but 200% more intensely, I want to cry.

Man, that really sucks. And I can't imagine how anyone could blame you for not wanting to restrict to 800 cal a day. I mean, I feel like my relationship with food is really healthy (and I would know, because it certainly hasn't always been).

But even I can't imagine being okay with having to eat that little. Because while I mostly don't eat out of boredom or sadness or anxiety anymore, I still get real pleasure from eating. And cutting back to 800 calories a day is basically just...not being able to eat for pleasure anymore, at all.

Yeesh, that really sucks and I'm sorry.

Aw, thanks -- your comment is so nice. I don't talk about this often because the response I usually get is a brusque, "Welp, them's the breaks, start dieting right now."

The hardest thing about losing the 30 pounds I lost a few years ago was that so much of my socializing involves food -- either going out to eat or eating at friends' houses -- and I hated being so awkward about accepting food of which I didn't know the ingredients and calorie/carb count. I really feel for people with food allergies.
