Understand, I don't like him much either. I hope his presidency is not an utter trainwreck. But I know why he won, and watching the full-on temper-tantrum meltdown being thrown by the losing side should be instructive for everyone.

Because liberals called misogynists, racists, the willfully ignorant, xenophobes, and homophobes nasty names like "misogynist," "racist," "willfully ignorant," "xenophobe," and "homophobe," of course. Those are awesome, all-American, laudable things to be, but you can't call people that. That would be wrong, and it serves those nasty liberals right that they lost for calling us prejudiced just because we are.

Basically because normal people are tired of humorless scolds calling us every name in the book and a few you've made up just because we disagree with something you said. No, Hillary, a quarter of the country is not "deplorable," and it's about fucking time someone knocked you off your high horse.

Bush was compared to Hitler. McCain was compared to Hitler. Romney was compared to Hitler. After awhile, it just becomes noise, and people stop listening to you because you sound bugfuck insane. (Oh, I'm sorry, was that ableist?) No, Chicken Little, the sky is not falling. No one is going to round up all the gay Mexican Muslim transsexuals into cattle cars and haul them off to camps after subjecting them to shock therapy, grabbing their women's pussies, and denying them health care, but from the ranting and screaming I've been hearing since November 9, you'd think that's exactly what they're afraid is going to happen.

Rank and file Republicans were sick and fucking tired of our candidates trying to make friends with people who basically wanted them dead. Rolling over and making nice with the press and the Democrats wasn't going to make them like us, because they don't just think we're wrong, they think we're evil. And so when Trump stands up to a hostile press and doesn't suck up to Hillary as the God-touched Queen of the Universe, those of us who've been sitting on the sidelines yelling "GROW A SPINE, YOU FUCKING PUSSIES" (Oh, I'm sorry, was that sexist?) finally got a chance to stand up and cheer.

Stop throwing labels around, stop calling everyone "Hitler" who has the temerity to disagree with whatever Snowflake Issue you've glommed on to this week, and stop throwing a giant-baby temper tantrum just because your (horribly flawed, my God, could you have picked a worse) candidate lost. Stock up on food storage and ammo like the rest of us have been doing for the past eight years, get used to being told "no," and grow up.

I have to say that a better option for every single side in the debate is to start getting more active in politics, if we're not already. Know who our reps are at the state and local levels and call their offices (in support or opposition as befits the extent to which they reflect our views) and attend local political events. Use our votes and our voices--- hell, make politics one of our new fandoms, in a sense.

I am not in any way suggesting that you personally are not doing this; I have no way of knowing anything about your personal level of political engagement or the political climate where you live. But I think we ended up with two highly flawed candidates because too many of us all over the political spectrum didn't engage "early and often", as the saying goes. The US system of government is high-maintenance on the part of the voters and we collectively haven't been active enough about that for a while.

Well, I think we ended up with Hillary because of superdelegates (seriously, Bernie was cheated out of the nomination, IMO), and we ended up with Trump because twelve other people threw their hats into the ring and then refused to leave even though they had no chance, and Trump had a plurality of people who were sick and tired of same-old-same-old. Lord knows he was my very last choice for my party's nominee. Hell, had Bernie gotten the nomination I might have pulled the lever for him, because while I think he's dead wrong about everything, he is at least sincere. I'm not sure that Trump is--but when it came to a choice between someone who I am damned sure loathes the Constitution and America (and me, for that matter), and someone who may not have read the document but loves the country even if he doesn't give a tinker's damn about me, I pulled the lever for him.

But even if we'd ended up with Cruz or Kasich or (God forbid) Christie or JEB! as the GOP nominee, they still would have been called "Hitler," because that's what happens every. Single. Time. Because name-calling has become a way of shutting down debate rather than engaging the issues. See: candidates as squishy as McCain and Romney.

I agree with you. We need more active engagement and less knee-jerk screeching from both sides.

That being said, threatening to riot and disrupt the inauguration is not the same as "active engagement." That's just a temper tantrum.

I'm the anon to whom the anon you're answering was replying, and I'm not sure what you thought was "fucking simple" about AYRT's overall comment?

Wow, I'm smiling right now because I think you and I are some sort of political mirror image/ photograph-and-negative--- because I might just have pulled the lever for Rand Paul, even though I disagree with him on... basically everything other than a mutual love for the Bill of Rights, but at least he and I agree on THAT? And it was Trump's behavior that made me start liking Hillary--- in about the last week before the end of the electoral cycle--- TBH, as opposed to just feeling she was less worse.

And, continuing the theme of "we are each other's photograph-and-negative", on the other hand I think HRC at least nominally consents to some basic ideas of the rule of law and cares about doing the job as she understands it, whereas I think Trump not only doesn't love this country, I don't think he cares for anything but his own self-aggrandizement and doesn't accept the idea that there are limits on what he's permitted to do. So, yeah, mirror-image/photograph-and-negative.

If I agreed with you that he loved the country even if he didn't know thing one about the documents at its foundation, I would be a lot more chill right now. FWIW, that's basically what I think of both Reagan and GWB--- they had some genuine affection for America insofar as they understood it, it's just that their understanding of the frankly complex (and interesting!) finer points of what it actually is as crafted by the framers fell well short of what I want from my elected officials.

And since we're there... wow, that is actually the first time I've heard of "Nazi" being tossed around for McCain or Romney. So, yeah, very much right there with you on more active--- and attentive--- engagement with individual candidates and issues and less, as you aptly put it, knee-jerk screeching from both sides, and more to the point polarization generally. (I'm trying to remember whether it was Washington or Madison who first referred to political parties as "factions", but we're looking at the reason the early leaders of the country thought they were a bad idea.) (Can we have the days of the Hatch-Kennedy "odd couple" back now?)

I'm not sure how both sides got to the point that each perceives the other as an actual existential threat to us on the one hand and that on the other that the other side's fears of us are at best unfounded. But it's a place that makes it really hard to do the awkward and messy work of negotiation and compromise among competing interests that a democracy requires. That... is maybe the actual thing of which to be scared for all of us, if anything is.

That was a specific response to you talking about how both political parties in America completely misunderstood what was happening, while repeatedly being coy about what you thought was happening. Not a general point, just specifically being annoyed about you. But thank you for making my point about how people respond to literally anything at all that happens with "THIS IS WHY TRUMP WON!" It's not a general political point. It's that you, specifically, annoyed me.

I'm not going to respond in depth to what you're saying because what's the fucking point. I'm not going to argue you out of it, it's your fucking viewpoint, whatever, go live your life. I wager probably loads of Republicans and right-of-center people in America are thinking along the lines of what you're thinking. Absolutely. It's a thing people think, right or wrong.

What I'm not sure about is whether it's an explanation of why whatever margin of people in the key swing states voted for Donald Trump. Maybe it was because they agree with you about this stuff. But this is kind of exactly my point: everyone thinks that the reason that those voters voted the way that they did was because of their particular bugaboo issue. What you yourself understood to be the faults of the left in America is not necessarily the singular and sole reason things turned out the way they did.

Personally I'm still going to believe in what I think is right regardless but it just grinds my gears.

And when you call people bigots who aren't bigots, your credibility is already shot, and then when you call someone the second coming of Hitler-Satan, well, why should we listen to you. Stop singling people out because of their religion and supporting religion-specific legislation and supporting politicians that float around ideas like internment camps for American Muslims, if you don't want to be called bigots.

Stop refusing to fill prescriptions you personally disagree with, or refusing to serve customers in burqas or turbans or same-sex relationships if you don't want to be called bigots.

Stop defending police who shoot unarmed children because you think the children looked suspicious, if you don't want to be called bigots.

Stop harassing non-whites at polling places, or anyone who's trying to use a public toilet if you don't want to be called bigots.

And most of all, stop supporting candidates that are repeatedly lauded by David Duke and Stormfront, if you don't want to be called bigots.
