In this case, I'm experiencing a variant, where I'm not sure whether the masks in the picture are face up or down, without looking at things like the overlap and where the strings attach...it keeps fluctuating for me.

I have been very tempted to do this many times, but I'm always afraid that the other details in the fic will not relate to my fandom/otp and will throw me out of the experience...

I've done this before! I don't do it very often, because I mostly only read fic about my OTPs in the first place. But once or twice I've come across a really hot bit of smut, and just changed the names to make it about my OTP.

I've never done it for a whole fic, though. I think I'd still be too hung up on the fact that it wasn't really my OTP in the fic. But it works for smut scenes, if the scene is long enough and hot enough to make it worth it.
