Well, they're not, except as a sort of broad-brush thing. But Utah has a different culture than Texas, which has a different culture than California, which has a different culture than Mississippi, which has a different culture than New York.

Somehow, we make it work, but I'm really afraid that we're not going to be able to for much longer because the divide (at least from where I'm sitting) looks awfully deep and wide, and it's only getting more so. We're yelling at each other instead of talking to each other, at least in the public square. It makes me sad, honestly.

Well when it comes to New York, upstate is very different from NYC. I attribute my skepticism toward viewing states this way partly to being from New York and seeing the huge differences between different parts of the state. I just think it would be better to acknowledge that there are tons of conservatives in places like New York and California and plenty of liberals in the south and midwest. Sure, states tend to go either blue or red, but for every person who says that the electoral college is keeping the liberal elites in New York from overwhelming everyone else's votes, there's a conservative in a blue state (with the same opinions that the first person is claiming the electoral college is protecting) who feels like their vote doesn't count.
