I don't get Taylor Swift *at all* but I find her voice completely obnoxious and I don't think she sings well at all.

Some of her songs might be okay under better singers, but that also begs the question why someone so mediocre rose so high in the first place.

And see, I've heard a lot of people cover her songs, but I never enjoy it the way I do when she sings them. Because while I agree with you that her voice isn't very strong, it is very expressive. She wrote those songs and she knows exactly the feeling she wants to put into them - and for me that comes through pretty beautifully in most of her stuff.

I can get into singers who aren't technically skilled but put the right emotion into their song, but Taylor Swift never comes off that way to me so her songs just all sound bad to me.

Good for Taylor Swift, though. Why should mediocre talent rising to the top be a men's only game? If Rod Stewart could be megastar with his lack of creativity and 4-note range, why shouldn't Taylor with her undersupported, pitchy vocals and 9th grade poet lyrics have her day in the sun? Her lyrics might be the stuff of baby's first creative writing class, but at least she wrote them herself.

She's a very talented songwriter (not a producer but a songwriter), she's incredibly charismatic, and she has a preternatural gift for working out ways to say things that emotionally resonate with huge swaths of the human race

I would say that those are pretty consistently the three most important traits for a pop star for the last 60 years
