Re: how would you describe your political beliefs?

No, there is a term that describes that.

It's "special snowflake".

yeah, no, it's not that i'm special it's that politics is complicated and nuanced and anyone that states clearly they are one label or another is bound to disagree with other on what that label means to them and what the qualifiers are for being part of that group.

go on with your bad self though.

Nayrt

I don't think it's impossible, in principle, for there to be terms that are useful descriptions of political groupings. I don't know how many of those there really are in American discourse nowadays. Certainly AYRT is a dick either way.

idk, most of the time it's like tell me exactly what a progressive or conservative is and i can find you someone that disagrees on even what the core necessities are. everyone plays True Liberal True Conservative True *Whatever games with this. to portray exactly would be to list down every position on every issue and there are way too many for that. i've been called moderate, conservative, libertarian, liberal, progressive, radical at different points for different views i hold.

hell, people have argued forever on here over what makes you a true blue liberal for long enough

Politics are complicated.

I'm getting really annoyed at this binary way people so many people seem to think about politics, especially the kind of people who like to throw around terms like "special snowflake." They act like it's so simple. Either you love Hillary or you love Trump. If you don't like one, then you like the other. If you hold one/some liberal view(s), then you agree with everything "The Left" says, and if you say anything that disagrees with anything "The Left" says or does, then you're a big old hypocrite.

Pretty much any time I saw someone complaining about either Trump or Hillary, the response ended up being "well the other one is worse." I've seen so many people try to shut down Trump critics with "yeah, but you voted for a candidate (Hillary) who..." or even just "Hillary lost, deal with it!!!" like they just assume everyone who criticizes Trump loves Hillary.

And of course, you can try to make it simple by yelling down anyone who tries to express anything nuanced at all. Just assume they're on "the other side," interrupt them to tell them what they actually think even if they say they don't (if the side you put them on thinks it, then they think it. If you THINK the side you put them on thinks it, then they think it). Remember a time when someone else on "their" side said something that disagrees with whatever they're saying, and call them out for being a hypocrite. Or hell, just accuse them of crying or being a baby. That works too.

I agree that "left" and "right" is a strict binary that we suffer from as a society, but that's why those aren't the only words to describe politics. There are plenty of "schools of thought", so to speak, and qualifiers. It's really not hard to say "I'm generally socially liberal and fiscally conservative" or something, either. Any general understanding of political science gives you plenty of descriptors for various philosophies.

except people will argue with you about those too, and how if you don't follow stance core-to-them-personally A and B, you aren't really liberal and the other things don't matter and you're a fraud.
