Another point in addition to what others have said is that a lot of these people might be young fans. Teenagers can be oblivious. As a teen, I asked a Spanish fanfic writer if she could translate her fic into English. Not my proudest moment at all, it makes me cringe now, but I was fifteen and just not thinking.

(Before I get dogpiled, yes, I know it was dumb.)

As a teen I really loved one asian, possibly Japanese, Final Fantasy fanartist. I happily posted how I loved it in English and added my newly drawn fanart in artists's style. I recieved a very discouraging message in English which is strange as it was pre Google translate times. I felt quite bad at the time. So you're not alone.

Readers who speak other languages usually translate fics themselves rather than expecting the author to be able to do the work.
