I'm curious about what you believe now and how you reached that?

Also, I read that as "cartoonist" instead of "creationist". I was very confused for a moment.

I'm not really sure how my views changed. I guess I've always been curious about how other people think, so I didn't close myself off from POVs that disagreed with mine. There was never some big moment of epiphany where I realized I was wrong. I don't even remember when my beliefs changed. I just kept considering things until I realized that I didn't believe what I used to anymore.

As for my current beliefs, I don't see evolution as something to believe in or not. It's not about faith; it's about evidence. It's a scientific theory with a lot of evidence to support it, but as with all science, we may learn more in the future that makes us rethink parts of the theory.

And for the gay thing, I'm gay. Though I didn't escape my massive denial until after my views on it being wrong had already changed. I wasn't never that invested in it being wrong anyway. I did the whole "hate the sin, love the sinner" thing and I was always much more invested in the second part than the first. I took the no judging thing very seriously.

You can easily argue that I stopped thinking it was wrong just because I wanted to and I would say that's fair. People scoff about religious people picking and choosing the parts they'll agree with and go along with and ignoring the rest, but I fully admit to doing that and I feel no shame in it. I can justify it with talk of the politics that led to certain books becoming canon and others considered apocryphal as well as certain translation conventions being favored over others and cultural context being considered in different ways, but at the end of the day, this is just what makes sense to me at some deep level that I can never properly explain and what makes me happy.

I think that second sentence was key for me. My parents were never quite the fundamentalists that I grew up around, but they were fairly conservative. But one thing they taught us clearly was to form our opinions for ourselves and to never just accept things. And I was always a voracious reader. So even from a young age I was already questioning things around me like gender roles. It took a long while for me to come around to where I am now, but the process started fairly early because I listened and questioned and never just accepted anything.
