I no longer believe in white privilege. Class privilege, yes, but not white privilege.

I would have been Black Lives Matter's #1 fan back when I was 18. (Had they existed then.)

I think white privilege definitely exists (in the West), but I also think reality isn't black and white (literally and metaphorically, in this case). I guess it seems to me now that a lot can be pretty circumstantial, and while we can do our best to describe trends - and I do feel those trends point to white privilege in the West - I also don't think it's always 100%. I can't stand people trying to interpret facts through the bias of an agenda on any side anywhere, from Nazis to hippies, and I think the fact is that reality can be complicated and doesn't always fit into a mold.

So, just to clarify, you think that if two people grew up in the same exact circumstances and went out into the world, they'd be treated as equals with no positive or negative assumptions based on their race?

That's not a privilege. That is a fetish and actually is pretty racist against Asian women.

Asian woman here, and uh, no they don't. I've encountered men who wanted to date me solely because of my race and it's gross. Also there are plenty of people who do not, for many reasons, want an Asian girlfriend despite all the disgusting stereotyping about our sexuality, submissiveness, etc.

you're wrong. I don't want any girlfriend. I want a boyfriend.

Why

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I believe even if you're poor you can still benefit from being white, it may not be as much as a rich white person but there are still small things that come with it.

But I do think it's fair to say that a white person in poverty might have a more difficult time then a POC who's extremely rich. Money is definitely the number one driving force in the world, and anyone who has it is extremely privileged.

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-24 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but speaking as a poor white person, I'm pretty sure life has given me less shit than I would've got as a poor black person given the same life circumstances. And if my parents had been black I'm not even sure both of them would've survived long enough to have me, and certainly not to see me reach adulthood. I'm almost blinding white so maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but I think a black millionaire who was born into wealth would on average have an easier life than a white working poor person who was born into poverty, but that doesn't mean white privilege isn't a thing. It just means class privilege is an even bigger thing.

So, you're agreeing with what I said? I essentially feel the same, as I said I do think there are benefits to being white even if you are poor.

Of course class privilege exists as well and that can have an effect on things and is probably why some people might think other privileges they have feel... less? I know how when you don't have money it's hard to feel "privileged" but I think that comes from a misunderstanding of what privilege is. Even someone who is a part of an oppressed group in one area can have privileges in others.

I'm white. I'm also, poor, female, mentally ill, ugly, an atheist and don't like or want kids. I don't think I'm very privileged.

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

In the ways listed after white, you aren't experiencing privilege. That doesn't change the fact that you have white privilege.

White privilege isn't always about your life being fantastic because you're white, it's about hey, your life might actually suck a little less then it would if you were another race. Because if we took everything about your life and on top of it made you black, you would have to deal with racism in addition to everything else going on.

I mean I get how it can be hard to connect with the word "privilege" when you just don't feel like your life has been that way, but I think it's just one way we explain how society treats us and how it can both help and hurt us.

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-24 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
privilege isn't a binary thing. it's a product of a lot of complex structures in society along several different axes. I mean, this is why we have the whole edifice of intersectionality, it seems to me.

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-24 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
that's not proof white privilege doesn't exist, it's proof you don't understand what it is.

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-24 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I do now, and I wasn't trying to say it didn't exist, only that I didn't think I had experienced it.

Re: Former Unpopular Opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-01-24 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I see different forms of privilege (race, gender, class, etc.) as mostly (but not universally) an "all else being equal" thing. Of course being white doesn't automatically trump everything else, like class, but it may still confer privilege relative to most non-white people of similar circumstances.

Rich black people will still experience racism, but okay.
