Dumb reasons for giving up a show

(Anonymous) 2017-01-25 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
So there's a show that I'm half a dozen episodes behind on, and I just found out a pairing I really disliked has become canon, so now I'm seriously debating just deleting the episodes from my DVR and moving on. I never was particularly invested in the show anyway, but I still feel like it's sort of a dumb reason to not watch anymore.

In the past I've quit watching shows because they killed off my favorite character, or because of homophobia/sexism/racism, which I feel like is a much more valid reason.

What about you guys?

Not liking a ship is usually my worst reason as well, and it's usually not even because I ship the character(s) with someone else but often more that I just really hate the ship.

Sometimes those ships are even popular in fandom, like I hated Chandler and Monica on Friends (the show was going downhill anyway at that point though so I never felt guilty quitting) and I also could not stand Jackie/Hyde on that 70s Show (to this day I still don't get why it's fandoms preferred ship because Hyde was a jackass.)

Yep, it's not really that I ship one of them with someone else (I mean, I sort of did, but I wasn't super invested in it or anything), it's mainly just that I really hated the ship that became canon.

A lot of times I really dislike popular ships, too. I didn't hate Monica/Chandler (although I didn't love it either, I was just kind of meh on it) and didn't watch enough of That 70s Show to really have an opinion on any of the ships, but most of the time I hate the fandom's most popular ship. I usually ship things that are either total crack that it seems like it hasn't occurred to anyone else to ship, or something that's super rare, or that most of the fandom actively hates. I have horrible luck with my ships becoming canon lol.

Jinx!

I don't really think there's a dumb reason for giving up a show. It all just boils down to why you're watching it and why you're not liking it, and there's no wrong answer there. Hating a pairing -- especially for a show you're not all that into -- seems like a fine reason to quit.

If it were a show you really liked, I might say stick it out and see if the pairing lasts or something changes that makes you not hate it, but I've found as I've gotten older that I have a lot less patience for things that just aren't doing it for me.

Because they changed time slots.

I dropped Turn when they moved to 9pm on Mondays. There was no way my tired ass could enjoy an incredibly slow burn spy drama.

Long.constant hiatuses within a season usually cause me to lose interest. I actually don't mind them in between seasons, or even a two-part season with one long hiatus. It's when the hiatuses are long and constant.

I also gave up on some shows when they weren't available on Hulu, iTunes or Netflix.

This is what killed my interest in Steven Universe. Jfc, all those bombs, all that dead space in between. I just stopped caring.

Why is that a dumb reason? You can be interested in a show for any reason, and if the thing that's hooking you is shipping a certain couple, if that ceases to exist, or a couple you hate happens, and you no longer enjoy it - seems perfectly valid to me!

The only "dumb reasons" (not my own) I could think of is like, the viewer is racist/homophobic/sexist and doesn't like that the show is "pandering" to "SJWS" or something.

Eh, you can give up a show for whatever reason you want. It's supposed to entertain you. if it's not entertaining you, then forget it.

Meanwhile I'm sitting here debating about giving up Earth's Mightiest Heroes because it's so damn ugly.

I had to look that up because I've not seen it, it's not the worst I've ever seen but it's not particularly great either.

Visual appeal can mean a lot in an animated series, for some things I can overlook it/not all stories need to be pretty but there are shows like... Sailor Moon that I expect to be somewhat pretty (and that is still one of the reasons I hated the first 2 seasons of Crystal.)

I've given up shows because a ship I didn't like became canon, and I've dropped a lot of animated shows because I couldn't jive with the art-style.

I ragequit The Mentalist at the beginning of S4 when they made the man that was Red John not really Red John. Because I thought the end of S3 was such a perfect way to explore what Jayne could do now, etc, and open up the show. But nope, epic scene at shopping mall ruined by retcon.

You don't have a moral obligation to keep watching a show you're not invested in or that's annoying you.

for as reasons as trivial as not liking the main characters teeth

never had that happen, really. I kinda faded out from big bang theory, but not for any real reason except that I didn't really care much anymore. (And I'll still defend the show against a lot of shit)
