THIS. This is why I always get a bit...annoyed at fanartists or fanwriters who always have them adopt. Not that that is a bad thing in and of itself!! I just LOVE hybrids. They can get so creative with them and just...GAH I love them!!

I also ship those two ships, so...yeah.

I realize this can be bad if you try to apply RL stuff to this, but since they are animals, I love hybrids. *shrugs*

I wonder if it's biologically possible in these worlds. I mean if the animals can walk upright, talk, make and use electronics....

Yes, given that they are anthropomorphic, there's absolutely no reason they would not be able to interbreed too. Everything else is different anyway.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2017-01-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
If it works anything remotely like reality then they wouldn't be able to interbreed. If through some happenstance of physiology they were even reproductively compatible in the first place (size, shape, internal pH, suppressed immune response) they simply wouldn't have the correct DNA sequences to allow chromosomes to align for the purposes of fertilization. ...Unless they were extremely closely related species; polar bears and grizzly bears for example.

But take from that what you will, since that's just how real life works and this is fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if interspecies relationships are just treated like same-sex relationships for humans - you can't biologically have a kid with your partner, but there's lots of ways around it with reproductive technology (or the old turkey baster, only they're probably not called turkey basters...)

This makes sense to me and I almost wish we'd get a sequel addressing it that way.

Also I'm amused at the idea of animal sperm banks keeping track of all the different species.

I'd assume they can't breed. Considering we never see any hybrid babies.

Also, for a great inter-species story watch the "There She Is" series.

+1 on There she is. It's the first thing I thought of when reading this.

In the Donald Duck stories, Donald's lucky rival Gladstone Gander is half goose, half duck.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Considering random bg character families are usually all the same species (ex. all rabbits, all pigs, etc.), I'd say the creators themselves don't want to address any of those questions.

Strange that it wasn't brought up in some way in Zootopia, considering one of their topics was racism (predators representing minorities). Would cross-species relationships be treated like LGBT couples? One difficulty those couples have is the inability to have children themselves, so in animal context it would just have the explanation of parts not working together (size difference being a big one). I'd guess those couples would adopt.

The two guys living next to Judy are two different species with the same last name. "Bucky and Pronk Oryx-Antlerson" A Kudu and an Oryx left ambiguous in the film but one of the VAs says they're a married couple.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
well, it's not an animated movie, but the webcomic "Kevin and Kell" actually does have a canonical hybrid - Coney, the carnivorous rabbit (the result of Kevin, a rabbit, marrying Kell, a wolf)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
There was a grimdark zootopia fancomic called Zistopia (yeah i know) where it was a plot point that predator/prey relationships were taboo and you were considered a deviant if you were attracted to the other group. I have mixed feelings about the comic as a whole (especially cause the art is really messy at times and it starts in the middle of the story in a jarring way) but if it might be up your alley OP?

enjoying this, thank you. know any similar ones? i'm up to date now

This sounds like something I'd like. Thanks!

I also wonder that, because they are all equally sentient, it seems like it wouldn't be unheard of to fall in love with different species. Unless biologically you are still wired to only feel attracted to your own species... which actually would make the most sense. Still, it's awkward watching stories that feel semi-romantic and knowing that the writers are never going to cross the line.

Zootopia 2 could be well-positioned to have the fox and rabbit be in a relationship and deal with prejudice, since the first movie was about prejudice, the theme would carry over. I reckon it'd be treated like a same-sex relationship. Which could be interesting... though it still is kind of off-putting to me, to be totally honest.

The standard rule in cartoons is that the boys look like Dad and the girls look like Mom.

I feel like at least with Po and Tigress, adoption feels like the obvious thing-- they were both adopted, if not traditionally. It makes sense to me that they would want to give an orphan a home, and both feel like it isn't blood that makes a family.

Oh man I totally ship Po/Tigress so this kind of thing goes through my mind a lot, like would it be cool in universe if they got together? It's canon at least that the animals can adopt other species so that would solve the kid issue if it was like rl where they'd be genetically incompatible for breeding.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
logically, if they could interbreed then the world would be populated by hybrids instead of distinct species. ergo, they probably can't.

you'd like this little series about a bunny girl and a cat boy. honestly, if they make zootopia 2, i really want them to have at least a cameo (shot in the dark, but you know whatever).

This is the kind of stuff that worries me also, OP! I kept on about how Miss Piggy and Kermit ended up with male frog kids and pig girl kids in A Muppet Christmas Carol when I watched it as a child and my mum told me to stop being intense. :D
