I was once on a very small plane that flew through a storm cloud. We were in free fall for about 3 seconds. So, that. That I can think of just now.

ETA: I've had a few p serious health scares but I think I got closest to death on that day.

My car accident in May 2015. I was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer at highway speeds, my car was absolutely totaled, and I somehow walked away from it with only minor whiplash, a bump on the back of the head, and a knee injury.

I almost drowned once. Got caught in a...whatever the river version of a riptide is. Scary as fuck.

Falling off a boat in the middle of a lake. Life vests are really called that for a reason.

When I was twelve I was kicked in the head by a horse while I was at a riding camp. Explains a lot about me, doesn't it?

I fell off a horse and ALMOST got kicked in the head immediately after around age 11. I was also dropped on my head as a baby. Between the two we almost had the same thing happen :P

I almost drowned a few times.

Slow internal bleeding from Crohn's. I was told I might have died without a blood transfusion.

Damn, that sounds bad. Even at its worst mine has only managed to drop my weight to 93 lbs.

About 10 years ago, I was nearly taken down by a blood disorder called TTP. I also had unrelated fluid around my heart which they never found the cause of. The Doctors told me I was a day away from death, and if I waited any longer to come in, I wouldn't have made it.

I was born 3 months premature--it's more survivable now, but thirty plus years ago it was vanishingly rare to make it with as few problems as I ended up with. Was flown to UC San Francisco right after birth or I probably still would've died.

I was born three months premature as well. I am turning 30 in April.
My Mom went to the ER on a Friday afternoon saying she was having contractions. They sent her home and told her to come back on Monday if she still felt the same. I was born early Sunday morning at home. Dad had called an ambulance and they were having Mom walk down the hallway from her room to the living room when I pretty much fell out. One of the paramedics caught me. I stayed in the hospital until mid July. I dropped down to one pound and seven ounces (born just under three pounds).

Probably just surviving my time in the womb, since my mother is pretty much the queen of miscarriages. It's both awe inspiring and incredibly sad.

Outside of that, I got trapped by water going back out into the ocean. Not really a riptide, just the pullback from a large wave, but I was very young. I can still remember cutting my hands open on the ocean floor trying to get enough of a hold to keep myself from being dragged out to sea.

When I was a kid, I fell out of the car on the highway (don't know whether I opened the door, or it wasn't shut properly).

When I was learning to drive, I skidded on an icy road and almost drove off a cliff.

I have, twice, had serious respiratory attacks, which could have killed me.

I had diabetic ketoacidosis--to the point where I was having Kussmaul breathing--I couldn't catch my breath at all. I live with my sister and she took me to the local ER--and I was then transported (after being given much morphine to calm me the fuck down) to a larger regional hospital's ICU and I was in there for three or four days. The doctors told my sis that if she hadn't brought me in when she did, I probably would've died.

And when they did the intake, I didn't tell them I had diabetes, either (type 2)--my sister finally told them.

I got sucked out by a riptide when I was a kid, it was so fucking scary. I still remember the feeling of fighting it with all my might and just getting pulled further and further from shore. I was lucky that there just happened to be a guy on a jet-ski about where I ended up, 'cause I used up all my energy and I was absolutely ready to go under.

Haven't been in water that wasn't a wading pool since.

I was very narrowly missed by a lightning strike. That was... uncomfortable but lucky.
