Uh, not if you shipped John and Mary.

I don't think they were really looking to tell Johnlock shippers it was possible either, they've been writing both Sherlock and John as interested exclusively in women.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
They've been writing john that way, anyway.....

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
John, maybe. Sherlock, not so much. And they gave us Parentlock, I don't see how you can say it wasn't possible that they were throwing the Johnlock shippers a bone.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, Moffat isn't really subtle when he actually wants to write a romantic relationship.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
One can say it because they have said time and time and time again that they don't intend them as a couple. Ever.

TJLC is a made up, non evidential group fantasy. You were all wrong.

Get. Over. It.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you so invested in this?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
MTE.

People talk a lot of shit about Johnlock shippers, and at least a little of it is justified, but I see way more nastiness coming from people who can't control their hate-on for Johnlock shippers.

Like, why is it that people in groups are so often incapable of realizing when the backlash against something has become disproportionate to the thing itself?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the shippers, the conspiracy theorists who have been certain all along that the creators intended it.
Not hating them, tho' the fact that dissent is read as 'hate' says a lot. Just think they are wrong and ought to admit it, especially after all the "ooh, how we will crow when we are proved right"?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you about the TJLC crowd, but it is possible to dissent without being a condescending jerk about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO I am NOT one of the TJLC people, I think they are delusional.

I just think the ep could have been interpreted many ways, for different ships. Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about exclusively since he cares an awful lot for John, but he also is still awfully obsessed with The Woman.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't "give us Parentlock" except in your desperately reaching minds. Otherwise I'm in a multi-way poly relationship with every friend whose kid I've cuddled in their presence.

The writers/actors don't read fic (unless tastelessly forced), they don't nod to tropes. It's in your heads and that's fine.

/ship them myself, never understood why having a 'canon' ship matters a damn. And don't give me that representation shit. The vast majority of shippers are not in the group they fetish.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 09:21 am (UTC)(link)

Lol, that's not what parentlock means.

Parentlock literally just means a scenario in which John and Sherlock end up raising a kid together. John and Sherlock being in a romantic/sexual relationship is not an inherent part of parentlock. Johnlock coincides with parentlock a lot, but plenty of people have written platonic parentlock.

Hell, a scenario where Sherlock raises a baby by himself (entirely without John) probably still qualifies as parentlock - though I doubt it would satisfy what most johnlock shippers are looking to get from a parentlock scenario.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Why are people so rabid about this issue? lol

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No-one's 'rabid' - your persecution complex is showing. I just think it's daft.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe just a little froth. Not like full-on toothpaste mouth or anything. :)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT. OK, if you say so, though in context the AIRT did seem to mean shipping too.

I wouldn't have thought they *need* to read fic to be aware of ships and tropes in this fandom, given the fans show them the tropes anyway...

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
The fate of John/Mary was already clear before this episode.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I know, I was just stating that if someone shipped it they wouldn't be someone who had their ship open.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
IA but you're on dangerous ground here. The True Believers will turn on you.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
I would argue they've been writing Sherlock as ambiguously asexual-ish. I mean, YMMV on whether the thing with Irene was sexual from Sherlock's side. For my money, it felt very inconclusive one way or the other.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, they literally said they didn't write Sherlock as asexual so...

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I said ambiguously asexual-ish and not just "asexual."

They've also said that he's just not very interested, and that he prefers to prioritize other things. Which is...I mean, preferring "not having sex at all" to "having sex sometimes" is not something that most sexual people feel is an option for themselves. At a certain point, if a person's sex drive is that low, and their interest in the idea of sex is that absent...it's almost like splitting hairs whether they're asexual or not. I say that as an asexual person.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-26 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The other most likely option, as I see it, is that he's very repressed. Which, incidentally, is the option I prefer. But I don't think it's the more canonical one, because the creators never discuss or imply that he's repressed. They make him out to be largely indifferent.
