My first "self-insert" was my first fanfiction - when I was like nine or ten, I wrote Pokemon fic. I guess Pokemon lends itself well to self-inserts, as I only played the games and didn't have cable tv so couldn't watch much of the anime. I wrote all about my super special adventures.
