It was Pern. My self-insert was basically Lessa and Menolly rolled up into one (with a more tragic backstory, naturally). I wrote a bit of it. But this was before fandom was mainstream so I had no idea other people wrote things. So, when I wrote it, I rewrote the universe too because I didn't consider writing directly in someone else's sandbox. I renamed all the Weyrs and had none of the characters from the books. I had renamed versions of some of them, all improved to what I liked and such. But the events and general worldbuilding were basically the same. The stories were always just for me though.
