To be honest, if you're walking alone at night, you *ought* to be vigilant if any kind of stranger is walking near you.

This is one case where it's not about being polite or non-discriminatory, it's about ensuring your safety. Obviously most people you encounter on the street won't intend you harm, but you shouldn't put yourself at risk because you're afraid someone is going to think you're a jerk.
