Re: Actual serious question: With trigger warnings for potential racism,so you know it's serious.
(Anonymous) 2017-01-29 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)If an employee fantasizes about being able to slap their boss in the face, is it the same as a boss fantasizing about slapping their employees? One of them is a lot more likely to have a little voice telling them they could get away with it, because they're the boss. It's their right as a boss, they're BETTER than their employees, they deserve to hurt them, they're doing them a favor by not slapping them.
Speaking as someone who grew up and was educated in The South, there is absolutely a mentality taught of "The blacks OWE us, we brought them here, we cared for them and gave them honest work, we even handed them their freedom. And we could take it away again if they get too uppity about it." It's like... when you say feminism and some guys will go "So I can punch females without looking like a jerk? I'm going to go punch all the females I can then, haha." Because they don't see women as human beings that it would be wrong to inflict pain on, they see them as lesser creatures and the only thing stopping them from hurting women is society's finger-wagging at picking on someone weaker than yourself. They're doing women a favor by not hurting them, even though they could.
So yeah, when you're white and grow up around racism there the idea that just letting a black person live you're 'doing them a favor' and it would be entirely fair of you to revoke that nice deed. It'd make you tough, but fair. So when a white person says they hate blacks and wants to kill them all, there's a sense they feel that it would be entirely doable, and I don't think the reverse is true.
(Disclaimer, I think the mentality given is wrong as shit and racist as all get out, acknowledging that it exists is not an endorsement.)
