I think a lot of the jokes he's been pulled up on are actually part of a persona of making fun of himself for sounding like an idiot. (Liu is clearly very attractive, Una Stubbs would never be interested in him, it would be both a terrible and ridiculous concept to date rape an elf, etc etc). I don't necessarily think that makes them *good* jokes but the target is obviously himself.
