For all your tax questions!

Amending Taxes

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I got back a corrected student interest loan payment. Before, I put it down as 0 but NOW I can put it down for almost $900. If I amend my taxes, that would give me an additional $250 back on my return. But I cannot figure out how much it would cost to amend my return. Or how hard the process is.

8 think you just fill out a form and refile. ..

Well, I have to amend it. But I cannot find out how much is costs. Maybe nothing?

I'm not sure why it would cost anything. It doesn't cost anything to file, if you do it yourself, after all.

I filed an amended tax return a number of years ago and it cost me the price of a stamp.

I moved and forgot to tell my student loan holder that I had a new address so my documents from them have my old address on them, will this be a problem?

Shouldn't be. Are you talking about the 1098-E forms you need to deduct student interest?

Yeah, I don't have the form in front of me right now but I'm pretty sure that's the one.

Yeah, to add those deductions all you need is (on Turbotax) the name of the lending agency and the amount of money. Nothing else.

Awesome, ty, sorry for the late reply, I got caught up in a thread.

Use Turbotax. Should be fairly easy.

You will be exiled to an island in the Barents Sea with only a lifetime supply of lutefisk for provisions.

Had my withholdings as 'married filing jointly', for part of 2016, then switched to filing as 'single'. Zero deductions on both. Is there anything in particular I should do? Does it matter?
