Do you like disturbing media? Whether horror or extreme tragedy

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the Killing Stalking and Series of Unfortunate Events secrets. Can you do "disturbing"? Do you have a high tolerance for disturbing stuff, or are you really sensitive? If it "depends", what kinds of factors influence that for you? Themes of death? Torture? Blood? Gore? Rape? Sadness and depression? Do any factors positively make a difference? Like if there's a happy ending/no one actually dies, if it's sexy/there's shipping material, etc.

I generally am interested in eerie, scary things, but absolutely hate torture and gore. I can handle blood (stabbings, cuts, etc) but absolutely no guts, and minimal body parts being separated. I don't like physical torture or long, painful death scenes. I can handle some torture if the victim is okay at the end and preferably if there is hurt/comfort involved. I don't like kids or animals being hurt at all. I'm sensitive to anyone crying, seriously, even bad guys, it makes me uncomfortable to see people cry and I don't like seeing anyone miserable.

But yeah, some disturbing things that don't feel like torture!porn really fascinate me. I kind of like things that have a scary or mysterious atmosphere. I don't really like death, but I can handle it just fine in action settings (as opposed to horror).

I'll probably go further with a series if there is shipping involved even if it makes me uncomfortable, yeah.

This is me here. Nonny, this is me.

(And it doesn't help that I swear to god my favorite torture scene involved someone being reduced to his head and his life source...while the rest of his body was in a box. Which his ex-friend tortured him about an awful lot.)

I'm fucking Transformers trash I'm sorry. "WHAT'S IN THE BOX RATCHET? IT'S YOU."

I don't mind disturbing themes as long as it isn't gore porn things like Hostel or Saw 3+. I also have to be in the mood for it.

I tend to prefer more psychological horror. For tragedy, I don't have a preference.

I can't think of any themes that you listed that would be in instant squick for me except for a lot of over the top gore. Though, excessive sex in movies or shows does annoy me.

I am generally down for disturbing media, with a couple exceptions: I tend not to like graphic gore or anything that feels like torture porn/awfulness for the same of awfulness/etc, and I *really* don't like children in peril.

I have a pretty high tolerance for disturbing things. I'm trying to think of something that I had to turn off or put down and nothing is coming to mind. Well there are some things known for being disturbing that I quit partway through because I just didn't think they were that good, but that's a different issue.

I am the wimpiest of wimps. I don't like gore, I don't like horror because I get depressed at all the bad things happening to generally decent people.

If there's a happy ending, if the gore is animated/drawn (especially in comic form so I can skim it), there's a much higher chance of me dealing with it.
I kind of love sad/depressing things, but it's rare that something hits the spot perfectly that heads it into catharsis territory for me, rather than just misery.

It seems to depend? I'm really into truecrime. And I like dark fics with rape and torture. But I'm not too interested in super gory movies. I'm more interested in psychological thrillers than in gore. The Hannibal movies (and tv shows) are favorites. I don't find supernatural-type things scary. I put that in my fantasy/scifi category and as more escapism entertainment. If I want stuff to make me scared, I'm more interested in things that could have happened in real life. I'm more interested in exploring the psychology of it all.

Actually, that's kind of true even in fics too. I like torture fics, but I prefer them to have a psychological element. I want to get inside the character's heads.

So I can do disturbing sometimes. Depressing, though? Not always. I usually need a happy ending. I'm staying away from A Series of Unfortunate Events. That is the sort of thing I have to be in the right frame of mind for. Just depressing and overwhelmingly sad stuff just puts me in a funk.

I can't stand distressed sounds. Screaming, sobbing, especially if they sound genuinely shocked and upset. So anything with a lot of those kinds of sounds I can't handle.

I also don't like bleak things. Someone wanted to watch Strange and Unusual Deaths and just... the sort of scary-story grim glee in the narrator's voice as he was describing these people slowly dying under horrible conditions really got to me. Especially the ones where they really didn't do anything wrong.

I like some disturbing media, true-crime stories are fascinating to me even if the subject matter is very often depressing as fuck. Psychological horror is something I can really enjoy, be it supernatural or not, I like twisty turny mind-game messes.

I don't like horror movies that are basically just gore-fests though, partly because they're gross but also because I eventually get bored of the grossness, like it's so oversaturated in the movie it's not longer shocking, just kind of dull and repetitive.

Straight-up tragic stories though depend entirely on my mood, sometimes I'll be all for watching something that's depressing as all get out while other times I will just not be able to handle it. Small doses on that one I think tbh.

No, I live for fluff.

Excessive torture and gore are the main elements I'm not down for. I'm fine with a little bit of torture and/or gore, though - just nothing really drawn out and graphic.

I watched that British film Straightheads (titled Closure in the US), which had some some torture and some violent assault and sexual assault, and I wasn't too overwhelmed by it. I wouldn't call it pleasant, but I could handle it just fine.

OTOH, I keep seeing recommendations for horror movies like Audition, and Martyrs, and I kind of want to check them out, but I know I'll probably regret it afterwards.

I can't watch/read anything with kids or animals getting hurt. It makes me extremely sad. I'll only watch/read stuff with torture and the like if there's a comfort element to it and all the good people get a happy ending.

I'm good with disturbing (can't handle a lot of gore, but implying stuff is happening is fine, and I can just look away if it's explicit), but I really need to spend most of the time with the hero, not the villain...so ASoUE actually bothers me a lot more than more disturbing stuff, because fuck off Count Olaf...

I am pretty much unfazed by anything, no matter how gory or disturbing, but I'm not really a fan of torture porn or gore for gore's sake. It always just comes across as a cheap way of creeping people out to me because it doesn't require any sort of setup or atmosphere, it's just a cheap shock and I hate cheap ploys for reactions.

Like, gore in survival horror games? 100% fine with that since it's part of the overall atmosphere. Stuff like Hostel? Nah bro.

I can take killing and horror, but even I have my limits like with SAW and Hostal movies where the focus is on gore. Imo excessive gore just takes away the horror out of an horror movie and it ends up becoming "torture porn" which I have come to begrudge for ruining the horror genre.
