From what it sounds like, they offered her a cameo. That's not really a return and given that her character was on par with Bobby the fact that she disappeared for the ENTIRE season and it took fan outcry to even get that little bit is ridiculous.

Also, see: Bela, Jo. They didn't have to KILL OFF Gordon and Henricksen-- they could have left it open for them to come back. Yeah, no. SPN has a horrid track record.

I can't stand Bela or Jo. Good riddance to them both!

If Henricksen is suddenly available, they left it open for his return. But Kripke made it clear that he was told he couldn't have either actor back for several seasons, at all. He had to negotiate hard just to get them back for what they had this season, and one of the conditions was no more time off.

I liked Ellen but that actress dug her own grave, imo. There was no place for her this season and when there WAS she had a temper tantrum and refused to take it. Whatever.

How was that a temper tantrum? Would you accept a job for peanuts?

He said it was the same offer they'd made her every other time, I hardly consider that peanuts. Would you hire an actress for a guest-spot who demanded a significant time and money increase that she knew you couldn't meet? And then refused to negotiate on it at all?

If it would cost her money, I wouldn't expect her to take the job.

However, as I'm sure neither of us will be swayed on this point, I'm going to drop it to avoid wank. :)

I didn't read your links but how does it cost her money if it's the same contract she always had in the past? Because she might miss a pilot opportunity (which is something I've heard her say before)? I don't really think that is in any way Kripke and Co's problem. It's Ferris's decision to make and not SPN's, you know?

But if it's something else, I'd truly like to know.

Honey, that's the entire reason I provided the links. She says, and I CP:

"We tried, but the deal SN is offering us is not doable. It could cost me money and work. I guess they aren't that interested in Ellen's return."

I don't think anybody's necessarily the bad guy in this. The show might not have enough money to pay her what they usually do. She's said that she really wants to come back, and I'm sure she would if it was the same contract as before. Where did you read that it was, by the way? She didn't mention it.

At the con in LA Kripke said they offered her the exact same contract as always and she refused it. He said it sucked because they wanted Ellen back but that she wouldn't take the offer. I was sitting about four rows away from him. (Excellent panel btw.)

That's your own problem with Bela and Jo, and has no reflection on the fact that the show still has huge issues with recurring female characters.

There was plenty of room for Ellen this season, if they'd tried. Try dropping Bobby for a few eps and have them check in on Ellen to see how she's doing? Have her come in and help them with a job. There were plenty of ways to give her some continuity without the fans having to bitch about it until they offered her a cameo in the last episode. The very fact that Singer knew ahead of time he'd be in at least three of the first four episodes, and Ferris had NOTHING? Despite the fact that both Bobby and Ellen were in the last episodes of the second season? Ridiculous and really indicative of TPTB's attitude.

That I agree with. And guess what? It's TPTB's show! They run it, not the fans! They get to make those choices. *shrug*

That doesn't mean I can't disagree and dislike what appears to me to be some pretty seriously sexist attitudes.

This sort of discussion is why it was a secret in the first place.

They were going to have her back in ep. 14 before the strike happened. Then it did, and everyone got screwed up.

If you think she should have been back before, that's fine. But they may not have had the budget to bring her back at the time, there could have been scheduling conflicts, take your pick. But I really, really don't think it's just a case of "Oh, Ellen sucked, let's drop her." as much as many different factors coming in to play where they couldn't bring her in or thought they had more time to include her later on.

And Ms. Ferris did have a pretty sucky reaction about the whole thing. I understand feeling replaced and being upset about it, I don't understand putting down Katie Cassidy or Lauren Cohen because hey, they're working women too and it doesn't sound like they get any more casting calls on their own than she does. It's hard enough to make it in Hollywood, you don't need a fellow actress sniping at you and calling you "barbie girl" as well.

Just to ask, what would Ellen have been able to do in the show considering that A) the show made it pretty clear that she WASN'T a hunter as much as an information gatherer (Just like Bobby) and B) her hotspot, the Roadhouse, was burned to the ground?

Lots of people wanted her back, yeah, but I honestly can't see anything she could have done besides give the boys even more cases or give them an idea of where demonic activity was going on.

It was good that Gordon died at that point, his story had pretty much run its course and it would have been redundant for him to keep going after Sam. I am a little peeved about Henrickson though, but there was no way he'd be able to appear in another episode when he was already contracted to another TV show.

Henricksen being off the show has NOTHING to do with him being black. It has to do with the actor signing a contract with another show that won't give him time off.

Maybe somewhat, but Ellen doesn't seem to have half the demonic/supernatural knowledge that Bobby does. And she certainly doesn't have the resources that he does either - she may know people, but with the Roadhouse gone, she doesn't have book after book after book.

I won't argue that it would have been nice to have some dialogue somewhere in the show about her, I do understand why TPTB chose not to.

Who can you blame for that though, the writers, the casting directors, etc? Because there's nothing in the sides that indicate race.
