Questions About Fandoms And Stuff

(Anonymous) 2017-02-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ask questions about fandoms that you're not in, or things you're thinking of getting into, or whatever

So I know lots of people who have watched SPN since season one, but say that they absolutely hate it now, but they cannot stop watching it. My question is: why?

I've never had a problem with quitting a show mid-season or mid-run, so I don't really understand setting aside half an hour every week for something you know you will not enjoy.

Maybe a hope that it will get better? I've had that happen with shows before. I stuck with House way too long because I kept hoping the quality would go back up. Same with Bones.

For me it was habit. It was just something to watch because I'd been watching it for years.

You get really invested in the characters and their relationships. What made the show so good in the early seasons is the characters (and especially family dynamics) were written in a really believable, compelling way. So even if the show is a burning garbage heap these days (which it is) a lot of people are so devoted to the characters they keep coming back, to sort of keep an eye on them.

Easy: They want to ride the hate train, because it's the most popular ride in town and the show *isn't* as good as it used to be, but they still find something redeeming in it. Maybe they still like a character or find an actor hot, but there's SOMETHING they like. But admitting that gets you booted from the train, so it's easier to go on as if you're just transfixed by the SPN wreck.

I think it's a combination of hoping it could get better, of having a few enjoyable moments that don't counter the negative but still make it worth watching, and the enjoyment of criticism. I know I hate the Hobbit movies but I love all the critical analysis the anti-Hobbit crowd have come up with. I think in that case, a lot of the frustration is that the movies had the building blocks of being great (great cast, great sets, etc.) but it fell short and so it's fun to try to figure out how to fix it.

For SPN, there's also a fandom. You make a lot of friends and your only connection is this show; if you're all hate-watching, you're still in a community. And, for me, I'm a completionist. I don't hate SPN but I have watched other things I stopped liking because I've already sunk a considerable amount of time and investment into the characters and I want to see what happens, even if I don't like it. And, there's also fanfiction, where the show merely gives jumping off points to make it better through writing.

I'm not sure I count, because I didn't start watching it until Season 9, when an irl friend dragged me into it, and boy was I confused! So I went back and got caught up.

While I think the first few seasons are the most consistently rewatchable, there are enjoyable episodes in every season, even when the story arc is less than coherent.

I'm invested in Sam and Dean, and my friend and I get together every week and have dinner and watch the show, and I've never had trouble quitting shows I didn't like, but even when there have been a string of episodes where I've ended up shaking my head, at least there have been some enjoyable moments, and my friend and I can try to figure out what the writers were thinking for the rest of it.

Overwatch

(Anonymous) 2017-02-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I had some questions about Overwatch fandom and shipping!

- What actually are the juggernaut ships? It seems like a pretty wide spread of options for ships, but are there any that really do dominate all the others?

- Are there any characters who just don't get shipped or are really unpopular? Do people ship, like, Winston with anyone? Or Roadhog?

Hanzo/McCree and Reaper/Soldier 76 for slash. Pharah/Mercy and Tracer/Widow for femslash. The only het pairing I have seen a lot of is Mercy/Reaper but that is because I follow someone who ships it.

I think Bastion, Tjorborn, and Winston are the most neglected.

Personally I see a lot of -Reaper/Soldier 76 -McCree/Hanzo -Widowmaker/Tracer -Pharah/Mercy
I'm sure there are big het ships too but these are what show up on my dash

some people shipped Winston/Tracer but idk if it was ever popular or not (and Tracer is canonly gay now) and they ship Roadhog/Junkrat slightly more commonly. I personally have never seen Torbjorn or Reinhardt shipped with anyone.

I've seen Reinhardt shipped with Ana in a few cases.

The ones I see most often are Tracer/Widowmaker, Pharah/Mercy, 76/McCree, and 76/Reaper. There are plenty of other mildly active ships, though, ranging from Genji/Zenyatta to Ana/Reinhardt.

As a Tracer/Winston shipper and occasional Athena/Winston shipper, I'm definitely lonely. But Roadhog gets shipped a lot with Junkrat.

Killing Stalking

(Anonymous) 2017-02-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm genuinely curious. If you like Killing Stalking, why do you like it and would you recommend it?

Re: Killing Stalking

(Anonymous) 2017-02-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I like it because I like abduction stories and psychological horror, and any kind of exploration of the captor/victim complex. I guess whether or not I'd recommend it depends on what you're interested in. It's a dark story, the art is very nice, and it's got gay sexuality between the two leads. If that interests you, check it out, the first two chapters are free on Lezhin. If you don't like those chapters then you probably won't like the rest.

I like horror and I like fucked up relationship. That's pretty much it.

would you recommend it?
Mmmh good question. If they are 18+ and are aware that this is going to be a not happy manhwa then I don't see why not. Otherwise go read something else like 19 Days or Out of Control/Never Understand or something more vanilla.

Speaking of, from what I heard it was being recommended on tumblr under "if you like Yuri on Ice you might like KS!"? I'm not jumping to conclusions but I find the idea of someone doing that hilarious. "Hey kids, if you like this fluffy thing maybe you'll like this Silent Hill levels of horror!"

I detect no lies.

The real FFVII question is, though, how much will the remake suck?

eta FFS look at this:
Come on, what happened to Cloud taking on the world like in the initial promo image? Is this going to be broody angstmuffin Cloud again? Huh? IS IT?
rrrrrrrrrrrgh

Re: Final Fantasy VII

Probably, a lot, because it'll be altered to accommodate the Compilation. Featuring a cast of Angsty Cloud, "Puppy" Zack (inexplicably featured for no reason), Gacktesis, and breathy fragile damsel Aeris.
