Yeah, I'm firmly in the camp of not caring if it's canon or not. Canonicity is only relevant in terms of whether you need to break up any ships in order to make yours work.
tbh, that's kind of why for fandom, I prefer works of limited romance. Leave them all shippable, that's best!
