I usually see it in the context that it will make the pairing 'problematic' and people will have to stop fan-shipping it. So saying one of the pair is gay/lesbian so it's homophobic to ship them in another pairing, or that if FinnRey is canon then shipping them with anyone else is racist.

I'm fine with wanting your pairing to become canon and/or not wanting your NOTP to become canon. That's entirely understandable
