My parents run their own business and it's incredibly tough some years. They've been running it for years and basically have had great years and other years where they've gone through savings. I think it really varies on what you're planning, but I'd recommend an accountant you trust and also a lawyer that you like to get started because audits are no fun. Mom's always complaining about them.
