This is how I think of it too. I mean, it's possible to take it to a ridiculous degree - like I don't think a fic should have to be tagged with "noncon kissing" just because the main pairing kissed for the first time without establishing they were both okay with it first. And I generally think it's pretty silly when people demand "switching" be tagged in a fic where the characters switch once. Like, if "switching" is the main dynamic, then by all means, tag for that, but if character A mostly tops and character B mostly bottoms, I find it pretty ridiculous when readers claim that reading about character A bottoming one time out of several was really deeply upsetting for them.

But yeah, for the most part, within reason, just believe people when they say something is painful for them. I mean, I've run into a few authors who've been like, "Pffft! So what if I didn't warn for major character death. It's fiction! Get over it! Grow up!" But for me, reading about one or both of my OTP dying is genuinely upsetting, and I would very much like the choice of whether to bring that emotional pain on myself or not.

Supernatural fandom takes "who tops" VERY seriously, though. So I tag out of self-defense.

That's completely understandable. I don't like when readers get all petulant and post upset comments about how seeing their headcanoned top be the bottom once was really deeply emotionally distressing for them. Because seriously? What?

But I have zero problem with it if the author chooses to tag for it of their own volition.

Personally, I'm actually a big fan of tags. I like knowing what I'm in for, in part because there are some elements I don't like and will happily avoid if I can, but also because I like being able to anticipate all the good stuff the tags have suggested will be in store for me.
