I think it's when the "Mom and Dad" are back at the house that has a same door as the place the kids are. It's a different set of parents and was just a set up for a backstory of another group of characters. These parents end up dying in a fire as well.

I'm still surprised how many people (who have read the books, people who didn't or only read some probably didn't think that there would be another set of children who were important in the series) didn't realize this was going to be a bait and switch. It seemed obvious to me, just based on how like, tropes work.

The reveal was ruined for me, so when it came I was wanting it to end ASAP because I already knew what was happening and...it just depressed me.

I still love the fuck out of this series though.
