I only pre-write in the loosest of senses. I tend to make a brief list of scenes I'd like to include within a chapter like "characters discuss feelings" "A and B bond over hobby" and then let the chapter unfold as it will.

I also didn't even notice that I had an alternating chapter habit until someone pointed it out. I tend to introduce a plot point in one chapter, spend the next chapter dealing with it and then chapter after that new plot point and etc.

This is all fanfic though.
