06. Just as a point, if they were found out they were dishonourably discharged- though I'm sure you know that already. So yeah, it was going on, but it wasn't accepted by everyone.

31 OP

It's on my ipod! Between that and the fact that I am always last person to fall asleep wherever I am it has never bothered anybody.

I more meant a lover but fldkjs okay

Well, there are people who don't have sex/haven't yet, ya? And even if the OP did, the iPod thing still remains relevant, since it wouldn't really get in the way...xD

I KNOW I just tend to think in terms of that flkdsjgs and sleeping with doesn't mean sex either! Also I would find it strange if my lover was listening to an iPod when we slept...I dunno xD

Re: 31 OP

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the term lover usually brings sex to mind, is all~
I admit that would be awkward, but if it were the only way for him to fall asleep, then you'd kinda have to understand, right? ^^;

If it were the only way for her to fall asleep..I mean yeah. It'd still be a little strange~ like I feel close to someone when I hear them breathing as we're cuddled up together. :o

Re: 31 OP

Ah, I can't say anything to that, admittedly. I tend to stray from too much closeness and dislike the sounds bodies make, so I'd rather drown them out with music xD; Not that I uh. Need to often or anything.

Aa~ I see. I don't often get to sleep next to someone either, but...yeah.

During the actual war? Not so much. They needed every warm body they could get. My uncle lied about his age to get into the Navy so he could be gay away from his parents and saw the world. He was not dishonourably discharged.

Re: 06

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
--actually during the war, some were, though they did seem to operate on the idea that some politician or other said a while back- "we need them, let them serve as long as they shut up about it" (which I have SO many problems with as a point of view but that's another rant).

Go watch this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109462/)- or at least read the first user comment. Obviously not everyone was dishonourably discharged, but if the wrong person found out things went sour.

I never said that it never happened, I pointed out that it didn't happen all the time. A lot of people who are in their 20s either don't get that there were problems at all in the past OR they think that it was a one-way trip to prison and disgrace when in fact, neither was the case. Luck and individual personalities had a lot to do with it, just like they always do in situations where a group is oppressed and some individuals thrive. I wanted to point out that it was possible to thrive.

Please watch the way you talk to people, you're talking to me as though you think I'm ignorant. I've seen that movie and I started going to Pride when you were in grade school; assuming I don't know what I'm talking about doesn't win you points.

I have trouble with the attitude you describe myself; nonetheless, it was commonplace then and it does allow people who want to serve to do so for the time being. The laws should be changed, I agree, because the problem is avoiding getting a dishonourable discharge when the war is over, of course. But there are many honourably discharged gay vets who are excluded by a blanket statement that "if anyone ever found out, they were dishonourably discharged." I am not saying that anyone who was dishonourably discharged did anything wrong--it was luck and personalities and timing--but I happen to know a number of proud gay vets who are working to get this changed. Unfortunately my uncle is not among them because HIV got him before protease inhibitors changed the world. ;_; If I'm touchy about this it's because it's not an abstract moral issue for me.

As if your first comment didn't come across as "I know what I'm talking about more than you do"? Oh, Internet-Tone-of-Voice, I do love you so.

Unfortunately, I'm really not sure how much the poor "proud gay vets" are going to be able to get done when we have people running things the way that they are. Some of the things that they've said are absolutely atrocious, and as much as I'd like to hope that things will change, I don't really see our dipshit leaders considering the idea to have much merit.
