Very well said. I write stuff, but I, too, know that what I write is based on the miniseries. I make it a necessity to post a disclaimer, and to this day I have gotten zero negative comments about my writing.

I don't even bother with disclaimers. And if I felt like it, I'd change names and sell my stories. I even plan to use my personally-developed ideas of characters in my original writing.

BoB's a funny thing. If you're into giving credit, you want to give it to HBO, Hanks and Spielberg, even Ambrose -- but nobody owns these guys. Nobody ever owns the people that characters become based on. Authors don't have lists at the ends of their books naming off the friends and relatives and celebrities that inspired the characters inside. So, now that I'm at a point where I'm really just writing about these characters I've developed from, well, writing about these people, I have no qualms about letting people read my stories without reminding them that OMG there are REAL PEOPLE with these names who participated in the same war that I don't own. And I don't have to tell anyone that what I write is fiction, because guess what, fandom? I wasn't there. I never interviewed these guys, I never asked about any illicit affairs they had on the field, never got an inside scoop that the rest of fandom just doesn't have. I don't owe it to anyone to hold their hand and explain reality and explain imagination to them.

But then, I don't disclaim anything anymore, RPF fandom or otherwise. It's not necessary to me until a judge tells me to.

I give credit to Spanks and Ambrose in every fic. It just seems like the right thing to do.
