5) Fandom is a poor therapist. It's time for professional help and getting to the real root of the problem, rather than just covering it up with an obsession.

12) Sexual orientation =/= personality. How you pursue your sexual orientation is. In other words, if they are flamboyant and in-you-face about sex in canon, and a shyly coy in fanfic, they are being written ooc. If they express attraction to character A in fandom, but character B in fic, no matter what the genders of A and B, that's not necessarily ooc. Sexuality is a spectrum that changes based on circumstance, not a fixed immutable point. TL;dr: Straight men can indeed be sexually attracted to other straight men.

15) There's no challenge to the imagination in writing yaoi for a BL manga. We write fanfic mostly because we are frustrated by the lack of something in canon. BL is already cover to cover sex and romance. What's more to add? I suppose we could write gen for it.

48) I was prepared to say, you know, totally not necessary to read teh slash if it doesn't float your boat, but it's starting to interfere with RL, and that's not good. Generally the way to get rid of a phobia that you don't want to have is expose yourself to it -- desensitize. The more you avoid it, the greater your fear of it becomes, because your fear of what you might feel is much worse than what you'll actually feel. So, read slash fic, look at the manga, watch the shows, as much as you can bear until it eases off, and you can talk to your friend about his sex life without feeling ill.

I do agree with that. And I will say that there's a lot of OOC het and genfic out there, too, and those bother me just as much. However, the yaoi/slash seems to dominate most fandoms I'm in, and there seems to be a large portion (or at least a very vocal portion) of yaoi fans who don't seem to put much thought into why A character and B character should have sex/be in a relationship beyond "they're both hot and look good together and they looked at each other one time". Not all yaoi/slash fans do this, I know that, but the vast majority of it that I seem to find comes across that way. Characterization isn't important, only two guys having sex is, and even that wouldn't bother me so much except for the fact that it's virtually all I can find in terms of fanworks for some fandoms.

Honestly, I don't care what other people find gratifying in their fandom, to each their own. I just wish I didn't have to scroll through 50+ pages on Yahoo!Japan to find one het doujinshi for something I like, or wade through pages and pages and pages of fanfic titles to find one I want to read, or fanart, or anything else I might feel like looking up. I'm tired of feeling like I have no place in my fandoms because I'm not into yaoi. My whining won't change it, and really, I never talk about it because I know I won't change anything, and I have no right to dictate what others enjoy. Sometimes I just need to complain.

Oh yeah, I won't argue that there's a lot of OOC Yaoi out there. Some of it eye tearing. But it's not because it's yaoi. It's because it's an example of shallow, trite, poorly considered writing. But that goes into the whole 90 percent of everything is crap, and that is certainly true of yaoi.

I'm not sure that the Japanese even consider characterization when they make doujin. It honestly seems like that isn't something they particularly value. I have a ton of doujin, even the ones I love have nothing whatsoever to do with the characters canon personalities. It's all about the art.

I agree with both points, actually; there's plenty of scorchingly bad het and gen fic/art out there, too, and yeah, doujin personalities are almost always off the mark, too. But I can't read the doujin anyway, so I can pretend they're being slightly more in-character than they probably are, and just try to enjoy the artwork.

Why I brought the yaoi up is mostly that it's absolutely everywhere and seems to crowd out most of the stuff I'm interested in. I wind up feeling left out of the clubhouse/fandom because I'm just not interested in it and that's nearly all there is.

Eh, depends on what fandom you are in. Dr. Who fandom is predominantly het. There's at least 3 het-fics for every yaoi fic. If your fandom has a ton of interesting male characters and few female, chances are it's going to have a lot of yaoi and some het. If your fandom has mostly women with one or two male characters, it's mostly going to be het, and there's half a chance of finding some yuri.

The reason why there is so much Yaoi, it's because there is a huge demand for it that isn't being satisfied in any other way. There is virtually none of it off of the internet (though its gradually getting better in that regard as publishers catch on that, yo, there's a market). Het can be had in reasonably high quality from in any grocery store. But in order to get yaoi you gotta go to the erotica section and feel like a perv while you browse through a scant shelf or two.

I imagine if het were as hard to come by irl, there would be a LOT more hetfics on the net.
