They didn't ignore it, the series is based on a book, based on interviews with surviving veterans from Easy Company of the 101st Airborne division, and they all reported him dead, apparently. Which I think just shows that all secondary sources (and some primary) on events are flawed and faliable, be they fact or fiction based on fact. Fiction probably does *less* harm in that it states its unreliability from the start. Fiction that lacks factual basis is still fiction. "Nonfiction" that lacks factual basis is misinformation.

IE - no one has to accept that there were homosexuals in WWII, but they shouldn't be so butthurt over people writing about it, because it's fiction, and people writing about real vets getting it on neither proves belief or seeks to create the belief that there is a factual basis for their fucking.

TL;DR - Slash won't kill you. Especially if you don't read it.

Really? It's kind of historical fact, so I'd say that yes, they do, whether they find it distasteful or not.
