Back in say, May last year, or possibly earlier, there was a time when LJ deleted a bunch of fandom journals for having sexual or inappropriate material among them. This angered a lot of fandom. Most of fandom went on to make idiots of themselves via posting cat macros (or fail macros) or by "claiming" the song Hoist the Colors as the "Strikethrough 2007" anthem. Most of the journals were eventually undeleted, but it ultimately resulted in the content filters that hang around LJ today, and the flagging feature. I think fandom probably had a right to be upset, but there's a difference between reacting and overreacting, of which a large majority of fandom did the latter.

If you look back through news at about this time last year, or google "livejournal strikethrough 2007," I'm sure you'll find the remnants of what happened,

Ohhh, that. I knew about it/was here for it, but I didn't know about the Hoist the Colors thing; that was before I was really into any fandom comms on here. That really would cheapen the real meaning of the song, so I can see where you're coming from. Fandom wank, no matter how aggravating, isn't exactly on the same level as actual history.
