Re: 62
There are a few questions I can ask you, though. Feel free to answer any of them you would like to answer.
* What does looking at shota do for you emotionally?
* What does it do for you mentally (ex: thought processes, ideas you get, etc.)
* How has it affected your previous relationship(s), if at all?
* Why do you think people would accept females looking at that material over males?
Re: 62
(Anonymous) 2008-05-08 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)If I understand what you're asking, I like it on a two-fold level, both relate to power but on different levels. For the sweet, mushy ones, I like it because it takes "protectiveness" to a whole new level. The older character is obviously a role model and completely covers the younger character in a wave of protectiveness and love.
But I also admit I think the not-exactly-consensual stuff. In this case, I think I like it due to the negative values of power and possessiveness. In quite a lot of my fiction, I like power games. Shota takes that to a whole different level.
* What does it do for you mentally (ex: thought processes, ideas you get, etc.)
Well, obviously it makes me a bit guilty, hence the secret. Especially that latter half. However, there is a strange sort of limit that exists. Suspension of disbelief is at the forefront when I'm watching/reading shota, be it the ones of dubious consent or the loving, mushy ones. Generally, at one point or another during any given shota story, the younger party does not act like a child. There's usually something (other than the cat ears present 75% of the time) to let me know that it's just fiction. Something "off" about it that makes it not real. When something changes that, I get disturbed. For instance, in the OAV series Boku no Pico there is a scene when an adult male is about to have sex with a boy, who doesn't really want it, but says "If it makes you happy, I'll do it". Because this is far too 'real', and something that occurs in actual pedophilia, it made me kind of ill and I almost stopped watching. Despite being attracted to the power difference, I don't like watching boys being taken advantage of. I actually find this a bit odd, because when it comes to slash and yaoi between two adults, I prefer it when the characters are acting more 'real', ie, thinking and acting a bit more like men than one simply being the usual 'girl who has a penis instead of a vagina' archetype.
* How has it affected your previous relationship(s), if at all?
Well, nobody in the real world knows I like shota. Hell, most of my online friends don't. I did lose one internet acquaintance due to something that she viewed was my liking shota, though. I "ship" Ed and Roy, from the anime Fullmetal Alchemist. She tore me a new one telling me how it was wrong because of the major age difference and I was a pedophile and a bunch of other things, then refused to speak to me ever again. Interestingly, the stuff I read with those two characters never contained the things I like about shota. That was all about two broken people trying to deal with a very confusing world. I don't know what her reaction would have been if I'd mentioned I actually liked shota as a genre, I don't know what she'd have done.
* Why do you think people would accept females looking at that material over males?
Well, it's pretty common belief that when reading fiction, somewhere along the lines the reader is going to be projecting themselves into a role. When that happens with yaoi/slash, people assume that a female will be projecting herself into the position of whoever is being penetrated, whereas the male will be projecting himself into the aggressor. Therefore, a female is supposedly fantasizing about having sex with someone who is a hell of a lot more powerful than her, which is fine. The male, on the other hand, is fantasizing about fucking a kid, which is not fine. I'm not saying *I* believe that, but from what I can tell that's the root of it, although it's usually worded as "Well, a guy could actually do it [have penetrative sex with a boy], but a girl can't, so it's okay for girls to read it".
Hmmm...I hope I answered your questions as they were meant.
