Do what you have to

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
But I might as well be because I want what OP wants.

I feel you. I specifically keep politics off my Twitter (where I'm most active) and Tumblr, specifically for that reason-- I want people to be able to have some escapes right now, and I'm more than happy to provide them.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay to take a break and unplug sometimes.

In the USA we definitely need political people/activists right now because things are going to shit really fast, but even among those people I think it's fine if someone needs a day to unplug. It's EXHAUSTING.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. A break every now and again can also allow us to refocus and clear our heads. Much easier to think and figure out what to do going forward that way.

Yep.

The ONE piece of social media I have NO politics on is my instagram feed. And we have fun.

You do what you need to do for you.

Honestly, I'm in the same boat at this point.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm tired but I'd rather be tired than apathetic. That is what got us into this mess.

I heard that. Politics matters too much to me to ever be able to completely unplug, and IMO "I don't care about politics, can't we all just get along" is privileged af, but I don't begrudge anyone needing to take a break.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2017-02-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get that. LJ and Tumblr are my politics-free zone, FB is where I see all the activist/resist stuff. And some days, I just don't go there.

My political activity has ratcheted up something fierce of late. I've never been inactive, but I've never been as invested as I currently am.

But. I get you. We still need spaces where we can relax, perhaps now more than ever.

I'm planning on making a sideblog where I can talk about activism with those who are in the mindset to join in, but I want my main blog to continue to revolve around fandom, because I need that bit of escape, and a lot of other people do, too.

yeah my twitter used to be my fun time, my relaxation. i'm glad people are so passionate and doing so much but. it's just not fun at all anymore. my friends don't interact except to scream. there's hardly any jokes goofing off. maybe things will even out soon.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I've almost completely stopped going on Twitter. I'm a latina lesbian from the US so the news is very scary to me all the time, and I can only handle so much. On tumblr, most of the people I follow will at least tag "politics" or whatever so when I'm overwhelmed I can blacklist it, but my twitter is almost completely unavoidable politics.

I get it, I completely understand. I feel the same way, to a degree, and I'm an American. It's exhausting trying to keep up with all the bullshit and you need to do whatever you need to, to keep your mental health intact. I've been considering unfollowing a few people on my dash, too, right now I just scroll past political posts but yeah, I'm wearing thin on it.

Tumblr Savior extension helps. You can input keywords as a black list and any post that contains those words appears as a text message on your Tumblr feed instead of the post. "username made a post containing: 'Donald Trump' -- click to show." I like it because I can not see his ugly face all the time, but if I choose to, I can just show the post and read it.

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I understand you, OP. I've done similar things on my social media accounts and have designated a time for myself to watch the news and make phone calls. The political climate is so exhausting and frightening. The Muslim ban had me completely petrified because I have friends from those countries who are green card holders and I'm so worried about their safety. But we all need to escape sometimes. If we don't, we get used to things and grow apathetic and I really don't want to be apathetic.

All that shit is why I save up nice food/recipe stuff and just flood my dash with recipes when things get too depressing. I've gotten one note of appreciation for it so I think I'll keep it up.

I understand. Honestly, somehow even my porn blog has started to get political shit on its dash.

I get that, I'm very much the same. Fandom for me is an escape from reality for a bit, I don't mind following a few people who post political things but I don't have it all over my dash so I can have a break.

Do what you need to OP.

I can't escape his tweets even though I've blocked his and the POTUS accounts. People just keep quote tweeting and screencapping and giving his ridiculous statements more attention. It's just overwhelming and I don't understand what they're trying to accomplish. It's not as if he will somehow read their replies and convert to rationality.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I miss the heydays of LJ. I loved communities and keeping fandom stuff fandomy and it was easy to never see anything I didn't want to. I'm exhausted by the political and social justice posts. I'm exhausted by the outrage. I want some fandom back in fandom so it can be my happy place again.

I don't think you need to feel sorry about it. I'm one of those people guilty of posting a constant stream of politics on Facebook, and I told people they could unfollow or even unfriend me if they were sick of it. I've since refrained from posting so much and try to post more kitties. One of things I like about Facebook is the unfollow option. I can still stay connected with people at least, even if I don't see what they post.

Not real-life politics: but I can't stand the Ulfric Stormcloak, "Make Skyrim Great Again" posters, so I just started blocking anyone who made them. Because, seriously???

I assume they are made by the same idiots who consider the Thalmor dossier fact and think he is an undercover agent.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't expect so much comments to agree, it feels bittersweet since I was wondering if it's just me and I'm glad but sad it's not. Thank you, all of you!
