The wish for messianic saviors who'll sort everything out is exactly the fucking reason we're in this fucking mess

I feel like this type of attitude is just victim blaming on a general scale. There are a big number of reasons bad things are happening but I would put "people being assholes" above "people letting assholes be assholes in a rigged system where there's only so much to be done." And you don't know that OP isn't doing anything else. Not to mention some people really are powerless in a lot of ways, not having the health to protest or the money to help the right organizations, or just being in a group that isn't heard when they stand up for themselves, and wishing for a superhero is not removed from wishing the powerful people would wake up.

I should have said "one of the reasons". And it's certainly simplistic, and Superman and Captain America specifically are only one prominent aspect of a larger problem. But ultimately I do think that the way that Americans tend to think through politics is a major cause of the current state of affairs, and the John Wayne cowboy Superman stuff is fairly deeply embedded in our culture and our worldview and is a significant mode of that failure of thinking.

This is way too vague for me to agree or disagree, but people are scared and tired and I don't think there's really anything political about what people wish would happen when they cry themselves to sleep.

Course there is.

People feeling sad are weak and just asking for it!

Don't the John Wayne types usually help characters who can't do anything to help themselves? Do you think those situations don't exist, because I really don't feel right now that there is any one definitive thing we could have done to stop this that wasn't done for reasons of expecting someone else to save us.
