Re: PET PEEVES

Ha, I agree that's annoying, though I'm sure I do it, too.

What boggles me is that so many people say that when I say I'm vegetarian. "Oh you're vegetarian? I could never do that, I love steak/chicken/bacon too much!" Like, dude, I don't care if you choose to go veggie or not. But I loved meat too before I gave it up.

That just seems lie a weird thing to say to someone. Like, if anyone said "I don't eat x" (be it meat, dairy, shellfish, sugar, gluten, whatever) why would you respond "lol I could never do that I love X!" like??? who cares?

My Celiac friend can confirm, people do it when she says she can't eat gluten. "Lol I could never have Celiac disease, I love bread too much!" ha..

Lol, seriously. I have a friend who doesn't eat fried food cause he had his gall bladder removed and so he has trouble digesting stuff like that. But people will sometimes act like he is just being picky or something.

It's a polite way of saying "your stupid picky bullshit is annoying but I understand that your heart is in the right place."

Who cares that you "don't eat X"? I'm not being snide here, I just see the original remark and the" lol I could never do that" as just small talk. It doesn't make sense to sneer at the latter and not the former.

oh hell, that, too. bonus: i'm a vegetarian, but i have a lot of vegan friends, and so i've learned to make a lot of vegan treats over the years. the amount of people who hear that and act like i just threatened to do unholy things to a hapless carrot are mindboggling. it's like, guys, sugar is vegan, soy milk is sweet af a lot of the time to begin with, you've probably eaten an almond before, and cocoa powder kinda just does it's thing. we'll be fine.

I have a vegan friend and I've made her vegan stuff all the time and it is no biggie. Well, mainly it is no biggie because I just use the regular ingredients and tell her its vegan. Bacon flavored soy, my ass.

Baking without eggs isn't necessarily easy, though. And not being able to juse dairy in desserts leaves out a lot of good stuff that can't be easily replby soy substitutes without loss of flavor.

Almonds aren't strictly vegan, though. At least not if someone also refuses honey because "poor exploited bees" - almond farming kills so many poor bees.

Be careful, not all sugar is truly vegan:

My pet peeve is when someone decides to bring up how they are vegetarian even when nobody has said anything about food. Nobody cares about your dietary habits, although most people are at least polite enough to try and make small talk with your evangelical ass rather than do the morally responsible thing of choking you with a fistful of hotdogs.

My god, you are such a stereotype. I can confirm that people who get batshit offended over the fact that some people are vegetarians way outnumber the self-righteous vegetarians.

Re: PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have never seen a meat eater come over to a vegetarians table and lecture them about the evils of being a vegetarian.

And on my local college campus, the vegetarian regiment started it by littering the entire place with flyers about the evils of meat. If they'd just left us meat eaters in peace, we never would have made our OWN flyers to counter them.

So different people have different experiences. Imagine that. :p NAYRT, by the way.

that's basically what happened on this thread. lol someone mentioned being vegetarian and the meat-eater flipped shit.
