Insisting all viewpoints are valid.

The problem I have is that I agree that not all viewpoints are valid, but I also think there's a lot of extremely hard intellectual work that's needed to undergird that position, and I don't think most people are really thinking it through, and so it just feels like a house of cards sometimes.

I think you're overcomplicating things. It's not hard: fascism isn't something to be debated, it's to be smashed.

How do you feel about people punching Richard Spencer?

I hope he cried in the dark when he got home.

I think we should do it more often. Punch Nazis, always.

I think fascism is pretty well defined, at this point. I mean, our grandparents did go to war over it.

Too much so, it's been diluted and thrown at all sorts of thing fall under it regulating. A buzzword if you will.

I mean, you're not wrong that people throw the word around a little too freely, but it's pretty plainly obvious that it's been experiencing a revival the last several years.

Oh, hell yes. This is in many ways what has led us to the state we're currently in, because it's caused people to conflate "opinion" with "fact."

THIS!

Re: PET PEEVES

(Anonymous) 2017-02-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
YES!

Like when I get pissed at someone for being racist/sexist/homophobic/bigoted in general, and my parents claim that I "just want everyone to agree with me" and I can't handle "different opinions". Like...if you think that black people are inferior to white people or that women belong in the kitchen and should "obey" their husbands or that gay people are evil pedophiles, then no, your opinion is not equally valid. It's just not, and I don't have to respect it.

And that's not getting into the people who think their opinion (that has nothing to back it up) should be given equal weight as actual proven facts.

Exactly. There's plenty to disagree on in leftism (for example I'm a statist and I dislike how I can't find an antifa group that isn't explicitly anarchist) and there's even a few things in centre-right conservatism that are valid ideas. But that doesn't mean I gotta listen to literal neo-Nazis.

Well I think they're valid, just some of them are shit and not all of them are equal.

Nah, wanting the forced silencing, removal and/or murder of entire groups of people isn't a valid viewpoint or an academic debate.

+1

If you accept fascists/white supremacists/etc as possessing on some level equally merit as all other "opinions," you're validating genocide as a political stance ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
