The current creative-field push of "There's no such thing as talent! It's 100% hard work and effort! If you suck it just means you're not trying hard enough."

Dudes, my brain is incapable of correctly processing visual information. I've developed a whole ton of creative workarounds but no amount of pulling myself up by my bootstraps is going to make my brain normal. Just accept that some people find things easier and some find them harder and that's normal.

Yeah I work in the creative field and that narrative gets pushed a lot. Yes I worked hard to get where I am, yes many people I know did too.

That doesn't change the fact that there still are people who are more talented then I am, we may have worked the same hours, taken the same classes, but they just have it more then I do.

Oh yeah, I would never ever suggest that people don't work hard. Hard work's still very important. It's just that some aspects are going to come easier to some people and other aspects are going to be harder and it's ok to acknowledge that it's a thing.

I agree. I think hard work just pushes each individual further, but we still all have different starting points. Like someone who started off good through hard work can become fantastic, and someone who started off poorly through hard work can become good. They both worked hard but it was never an even playing field.

Talent is merely hard work + where you fucking plateau at in a given area. That's it. Some people will only ever get to a certain place and not get better, no matter how much they work at it.

I don't agree with that saying either, but I figure it's pushback against all the people who think that creative endeavors are all about inspiration vs. hard work. So you have writers who don't write "unless the muse inspires them" and people who think that because they had a good idea, that's 99% of the job done so maybe YOU could write their novel about the Kardashians in Space and they'll split the profits with you 70-30?

Maybe, but it always kind of feels like more artist insecurity at work?

"Aww no, I'm not special or gifted. I'm just a stupid idiot fuckup who was willing to put in a lot of effort and literally any other human on the planet could do the same."

I've also seen 'guides' to complimenting artists that go "Instead of saying 'wow, you're really talented' which can feel dismissive, go 'wow, it looks like you put forth a lot of effort into making this!'" and I just want to go "..... What about 'Wow, this is really great, you did a great job'?"
