The books were always really weird about house elves, I think. We're introduced to them through Dobby, this really sympathetic wonderful character, and w/Hermione's whole S.P.E.W. thing (and Winky, and Kreacher's Tale, etc.) we're encouraged to think about them as real characters with the right to freedom...and yet most of the protagonists use house elves without freeing them (see: Kreacher), and we're given to understand that Dobby's desire for freedom is an anomaly, meaning they really are a Race of Slaves Who Want to Be Slaves, which seems......not great.
