Secrets you can't be bothered making a secret for

Let's get petty

There was this writer, in one of the fandoms I hang around on the edges of, who passed away last year. I'd read some of his work before, but after he died I read all his available stories. Some were good, some were pretty average, but one of them...
There were Australian OCs in it, and oh my god. Their dialogue was just so bad. It was like he'd taken a list of Australian slang off the internet and just ran search-replace.
To put it in American terms, it was like... 'Howdy, y'all! Like, totally tubular! Gag me with a spoon! You're such a hoser!'

But the guy's dead. So obviously I can't actually say that anywhere in the comments or on the forums or anywhere vaguely related to the stories themselves.

I want to get back into some old fandoms, but my attention span has gone to shit in the last few years and I just can't read long books as well as I used to. It used to be a delight and now it's a chore. ;-;

You could do what I do, thoroughly read the Wikipedia pages. The way I talk about ASOIAF, you would never guess I have only read the first book.

I used to be part of an LJ comm in the Supernatural fandom, and there was one person who'd post an installment of their gargantuan 100000000k-word ongoing de-aging fic about once every two weeks or so. I used to click the links just to cringe at how horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE the "baby talk" was.

I think Crazy Ex Girlfriend is not nearly as good without Greg.

I've heard from a lot of people that they thought he was a jerk so they're glad he's gone but my response to that is always that the majority of the characters in that show are a mess and that's kind of the point.

I don't buy that they planned to have him go, they invested so much time in his character in the first season I think they just weren't smart enough to sign on Santino quickly enough for a second season before he already decided to go.

He brought a lot to the series, he was funny, his character was interesting and he has the best singing voice. A big reason I feel like the show isn't as good now is because they lost one of their strongest performers, the guy who plays Josh is okay but not at the level Santino is.

I haven't seen season two yet and Greg was one of my favourites so :( I was worried he had been the one who had left. At least we will always have Settle For Me

He's in the beginning of season 2 and has a few more good songs so I'd recommend at least watching that.

Don't worry, I will. I'm just really behind ^.^'''

Not really fandom, but I'm getting seriously drained by all the politics, especially on LJ, which is where I normally go to not be stressed. It's not that it's not important, because it is. And more often than not I'm talking about it too, so I'm part of it. But that's just it, I don't know how to break out of the cycle, and it's really getting me down. I just want to post dorky meta crap again, but I can't find it in me to do so, and no one else is doing it either.

Doesn't help that my personal life's a mess.

LJ is a cesspool of political bullshit. Get out while you can.

Sometimes, I read fic with lots of drama (especially relationship wise but can also apply to general plots) where it's very obvious that the author has a certain opinion on which character is in the right and which character is in the wrong. But everything they've written up to that point directly contradicts that. And it's driving me mad because how can you spend so much time on writing a story (that's not even bad) and completely misinterpret your own writing so much?
I get that different people interpret things differently but in a lot of cases there's nothing ambiguous about the situation.

I hate how common the word "anyways" is in fic, in the mouths of characters who are well-educated and/or from a fantasy universe. "Anyways" is like saying "acrosst" for "across" and "excape" for "escape" -- it is very colloquial and frankly sounds uneducated, and moreover, it sounds very American. The OED says there are cites for it going back to 1200 but who cares: they said things like "man com & se how schal alle ded li" in 1200, too.

Kylo Ren has no business saying "anyways". Danaerys Targaryen. Thranduil. If you put "anyways" in these characters' mouths in your fic, ~~I JUDGE YOU~~ whhoooOOoooo

I feel like (from how frequently I hear it in RL anyway) that a lot of people don't realize that 'anyways' is colloquial and not actually a correct word.

It doesn't bother me hearing people say it, since it is slang-ish and widely accepted, but yeah, reading it from certain characters is very jarring.

I wish mainstream radio would just spontaneously dump every artist/band/group that emerged in the last 15 years from their rotation, and make way for people who sound NOTHING like them.

I don't care if I hear those artists on lesser known stations, I'm just tired of hearing the same crap in the mainstream.

I really love femslash but goddamn do I feel bad about it. It just seems like there's no possible way for me to engage with it without coming across at best fetishistic & occupying territory that matters much more to marginalized people, and at worst shady & exploitative & creepy.
