I never know how to feel about fan art that is well-drawn, but looks NOTHING like the actual characters. There's this one artist in the Voltron fandom who draws like that, and I'm always confused when her art crosses my dash because for a few seconds I always think it much be art for a show I haven't seen. It's only the clothes that let me figure out who the characters are supposed to be.

Does it count as 'bad' art if you literally can't tell who the characters are?

I would say yes. Art is meant to convey an idea or express an emotion. Bad art can be skillfully made, and skillfully made art can be bad.

There's an artist like this in my fandom too, they're technically good at drawing, but if they didn't label their work/say who it was supposed to be, I would never be able to guess. Their style is very generic and their faces all look the same. The really unfortunate thing about that is they're constantly bitching about how no one ever reblogs their work, AND they want to charge money for custom work. IMO, yes, if you can't tell which character you're even looking at, it's bad art.

It's good art but bad fan art.

I think it does. If you can't recognise thee characters, it's simply not well executed.

There was this artist (I think the picture was even used in a secret or a GC thread here once?) who was, in theory, a technically good artist but the character she drew -Fenris from DA2 - looked nothing like himself. Instead, he looked like a dime-a-dozen random bishounen and the only thing you could recognise him by were his tattoos. It was just so wrong and yes, I think it was bad.

I feel the same about a lot of people who try to draw animated characters in a "realistic" style. In a lot of cases it's "nice try but they look nothing like themselves anymore". Or the other way around - as seen in the TFA fandom. Hux and Kylo tend to look all kinds of weird and not like the characters at all in fanart.

than again, once in a while someone hits it out of the park.

(Was looking for an excuse to link this amazing SU art:

At the very least, I like this much more than the original style.

I think I know which artist you're talking about. Is that the one who draws Shiro like, five shades darker than he is on the show, twice as muscly, and with facial features that look kind of like Shang Li from Disney's Mulan?

That's exactly the one!

.....I am kind of curious what this looks like, would you happen to have a link handy?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
i'm curious too...

Here's who I was thinking of. (http://thebadgerssett.tumblr.com/post/155789314392)

I mean, it's not bad art, but... they don't look like Shiro and Keith. At all.

I do see what you mean. I have yet to watch Voltron, but I see art and stuff on my dash sometimes enough to recognize the characters and...none of them, except Pidge, even looks like themselves.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-11 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, yeah, I see what you mean. At first I thought maybe you were just being picky. I mean, I like a fairly wide spectrum of interpretations of my OTP. But that fanart (while technically pretty good) just looks NOTHING like the characters at all.

I agree with the person above who said it was good art but bad fanart.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-11 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Looks very Mulan, as you said. They're clearly a skilled artist, though. Not everyone has to do spot-on fan art.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-11 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
unless it's an intentional AU, I think it's just bad fanart if they're unrecognizable. my friend commissioned our shared OTP from an artist on Tumblr, and when she excitedly showed it to me, I couldn't even tell you who the characters were. one had been given several dozen freckles across his face, the other had a skin tone five times darker than his canon skin tone. both are relatively bland Japanese anime characters in canon.

I... kind of hope my friend asked her to draw them that way, because I don't know what I'd do if I commissioned an artist for characters and got something that looked absolutely nothing like them in return. at that point it would just feel disrespectful to the customer.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-11 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll chime in with good art, bad fanart. You don't have to copy the show style to be recognizable. At the same time I find it kind of weird when art changes a major part of the character without acknowledging that it's a change? Like if someone constantly drew Rule 63 but acted like they were drawing canon and everyone else was the one swapping the characters.

(I'll admit, SU fanart with Gem Tiddys for non-porny art is just weird to me. Even with them being heavily stylized it's obvious the only gem with boobage was Rose.)
