I think it is all of the above? I mean, I think Rogue One, even with the grittiness, still felt Star Wars. It wasn't as gritty and dark as, say, the New Jedi Order. It still had some ridiculousness and lightness to it.

IDK, the whole thing where the Rebels were not shiny Good Guys isn't really Star Wars. There has been grey but there's also a clear good vs bad that really shows it's serialized roots. (I haven't really read Legends but it's not canon, and from what I understand, never was. If it went very dark, then it was probably not very Star Wars either.)
