Do you Volunteer?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Where and how? I'm trying to get into a few local places but they have applications akin to an actual job application and I haven't heard back from any yet. Curious about others' experiences.

I volunteered at an animal rescue and it was a nightmare. I had to fill in an application, too. I had set hours, a two week training course, and basically it was a second job but without the pay. I volunteered four hours a week and they were scheduling me 20 when I left. They used volunteers to cover the hours paid employees didn't want to work and had us do their jobs. I've heard it's pretty common with British organisations who receive funding from the government and it's better to volunteer at places that don't have an application and use an information sheet instead.

Yup. Two places. I volunteer at the local animal shelter playing with cats and walking dogs. The process there was filling out a form and then sitting through training.

My other volunteer work is doing attorney work and visitation stuff (for people who have court-ordered guardians) with a non-profit. That was a longer process. Had to send my resume, they did a background check. Took a few months before I heard back.

I used to volunteer at a library, a hospital, and a food bank. I had to go through an interview, a background check, and pass a test for the first two. For the food bank, it was just, "Can you use a computer? Have you ever comited a crime? No, okay. Show up tomorrow at nine and wear sensible shoes. Thanks for joining us!"

Trying to. The process is as nerve wracking as a job interview.

Until I got my current full-time job, I volunteered with a dog rescue. They work out of my vet's office. I was taking my cat in for a check-up and saw that they'd put out a donation jar, so I asked the receptionist if they needed volunteers. The coordinator was in the back, she asked a few questions, and I ended up walking dogs three times a week.

I've tried multiple times to volunteer at animal shelters but places are always "full" and never want any new volunteers. It's a bit disappointing tbh.
