Honestly, I don't think Disney would whitewash lead characters like that. I genuinely think they would be very sensitive in casting people of the correct ethnicity.

I'm not saying I have faith in Disney's ethics as a company, or anything. I just am not anticipating this being a problem in this case.

I'd like to believe that, but I don't have any particular evidence that they'd be sensitive about the issue. They didn't, IMO, handle Pocahontas well.

Pocahontas was more than 20 years ago... not a very good piece of evidence.

It's evidence that there's at least one poorly handled situation of racial/ethnic sensitivity in their track record. If there have been more recent examples where Disney has done a top notch job, then I'm open to hearing about them. But even a twenty year incident is enough to make me cautious. You don't have to feel the same way, though.

Moana.

Voice actors were predominantly Maori or Polynesian and they had a panel of 'this is my life' experts whose advice they were listening to.
