Re: What movie was an interesting idea...

The Star Wars prequels. Well, Attack and Revenge - Phantom Menace was just bad. But this is the problem that I always have with the prequels revionism people - they genuinely do point to a lot of really interesting thematic ideas and character ideas and aesthetic notes. There's an interesting pair of movies in the ideas that the prequels are based around. It's a pair of movies that I would probably personally really love. But those aren't actually the movies that exist on the screen, which were just... really poorly made and burdened by a string of terrible choices on every level of production.

Is it really shocking to you that some people disagree with you and don't believe that the prequels were bad? Movie tastes are pretty subjective. And I don't agree that they were poorly made. There were some problems with them, but I don't think they are anywhere as bad as people claim. Certainly not "burdened by a string of terrible choices on every level of production."

I don't know where I said I was shocked. They advance a particular view of these two movies, and I disagree with that view, for the reasons cited. I don't think there's anything especially shocking or bizarre about doing that. I don't think that advancing an opinion requires that you think everyone in the world should be required to agree with you. I think they're wrong about the movies but of course it's their right to look at the movies and take whatever they want from them. I don't see what I said that conflicts with that and I don't know what you want from the basic concept of talking about what you think about movies if what I said is somehow out of the order of things.

I think that they're not good movies. I don't think that the scripts are good, or the cinematography was good, or that the acting was mostly good. An exhaustive level of argument has been poured into going over the specifics of each of those claims on an almost second by second basis and if you think those things are good fair enough but that's how I feel about the movies. I don't agree with the people who think they're good. I think they're bad. I see what they're talking about when they say they're good, but I don't think it's accurate.

Naw, mate. Those movies are objectively bad. The script is weak, the pacing is uneven, the alleged romantic leads have no chemistry and the main character is mostly developed through poorly delivered exposition punctuated by manufactured angst. With that said, there's some nifty world-building, several characters have under-explored depth, and the unofficial romantic leads have a tragic bromance for the ages.

Whether or not a movie is enjoyable is entirely subjective. Whether or not it's well-made really isn't.

The thing with the prequels is - no one wanted to watch three 2.5 hour long movies about politics when you can see aliens and swordfighting.

they handle it MUCH better in the books and the clone wars show where it can be broken up. I've seen the PT twice and I STILL don't know what politic bullshit they're on about. Here it's just WAY too heavy handed

The thing is, I'm EXACTLY the person who would want to watch 2 hour movies about politics, if they were actually well done, in an intriguing, espionage, thriller kind of way maybe

They were not well done

CGI-Alien CSPAN wasn't to your liking? Picky, picky...
