I'd still consider myself a big Sherlock fan, even after the shitshow that was S4. But I'll definitely admit that after seeing all the faults in this latest season, I can now trace a lot of it back to earlier seasons. It didn't suddenly get bad, the cracks were always there, they just got wider and wider. I would say in general S1 & 2 are better, because they stuck closer to the initial premise of a modern Sherlock Holmes going on adventures. The later two seasons were too infatuated with the mythology they had created.

I thought the very first episode was marvelous and I hoped for more of the same.

Agreed. This is exactly how I felt. I watched several other episodes, but I was disappointed that they didn't live up to the promise of the first episode. And I ended up giving up on the series.

Yep, 3 & 4 both got bad but it's not exactly, super surprising if you really watched the first 2 series with a critical eye. I think they started off interesting enough but they didn't stick to what was working for it and instead went with everything that WASN'T.
